Fort Wayne, Ind. – Junior EJ Farmer scored a team-high 19 points, but the Youngstown State men's basketball team fell to Purdue Fort Wayne, 82-78, on Sunday afternoon at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center.
The loss snapped a four-game winning streak and drops the Penguins to 17-7 overall and 9-4 in Horizon League play.
The Mastodons improve to 15-8 overall and 6-6 in the league.
DJ Burns collected his sixth straight double-double and 14th of the season with 15 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. Brandon Rush poured in 14 points and made four 3-pointers while Ziggy Reid added 12 points.
The Mastodons scored 16 of the first 21 points of the second half to turn a three-point halftime deficit into an eight-point lead, 50-42, less than four minutes into the stanza.
Reid hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to five, 50-45, but the Mastodons used an 11-2 run over a 4:30 span to boost their lead to a game-high 14 points, 61-47, with 11:12 remaining.
The Penguins answered with a 12-2 run of their own to get within four, 63-59, keyed by six points from Farmer.
The Penguins continued to battle but could not get any closer than four points over the last 7:32.
Youngstown State stated the game fast and led by as many as eight points on two occasions. Rush made three 3-pointers to lead the Penguins to an 18-10 lead with just over 13 minutes remaining.
The Mastodons went on a 14-5 run to take 24-23 lead before Rush buried his fourth 3-pointer of the half to regain a 26-24 lead for the Penguins at the 8:16 mark.
After another lead change and two ties over the next six minutes, the Penguins scored the final five points of the half on a 3-pointer by John Lovelace, Jr., and a driving layup by Burns to take a 37-34 lead into the lockerroom.
Youngstown State begins a three-game homestand against Milwaukee, Thursday, Feb. 8. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. at Beeghly Center.
