Penguins Earn 20th Win with 84-80 Overtime Triumph at Milwaukee

Milwaukee, Wis. – For the first time in its Division I history the Youngstown State men's basketball team won 20 games in consecutive seasons after knocking off Milwaukee in overtime, 84-80, on Friday night at UWM Panther Arena.

The Penguins, who improve to 20-9 overall and 12-6 in the Horizon League, last won 20 games in back-to-back seasons in 1963-64 and 1964-65. It also marks just the third 20-win campaign since YSU joined the Division I ranks in 1981-82.

Senior DJ Burns posted his 19th double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Ziggy Reid also scored 16 points and had eight boards. Freshman Gabe Dynes recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds while John Lovelace, Jr., scored 15 points, including seven in overtime.

Leading the Panthers, who fall to 14-14 overall and 9-8 in the league, was BJ Freeman with a game-high 22 points and eight assists.

Youngstown State used an impressive defensive effort in the first half that limited the Panthers to a 22.9 field-goal percentage and built a 14-point halftime lead, 39-25.

The Penguins trialed by seven, 14-7, before going on a 16-0 run to take a 23-14 lead midway through the half. Senior Brandon Rush sparked the run with a 3-pointer, and baskets by Dynes, Bryson Langdon and a 3-pointer by Lovelace gave the Penguins a 17-14 edge.

Layups by Rush, EJ Farmer and Imanuel Zorgvol gave the Penguins to nine-point advantage.

Milwaukee trimmed the lead down to 25-21, but the Penguins scored the next seven to regain an 11-point edge, 32-21, with 3:28 left.

Lovelace hit his second 3-pointer of the half and Reid made two charity tosses to close out the first half scoring.

Milwaukee quickly got back into the game scoring 15 of the first 19 points of the second half to trim the lead to 43-40. The Panthers took a 47-45 lead after two free throws by Freeman.

After six lead changes, Milwaukee's Faizon Fields' layup with 14 seconds left knotted the game at 67-67 to force the extra period.

The Penguins scored the first seven points of overtime on a basket by Burns, a three-point play by Lovelace and another layup by Burns to take a 74-67 lead.

Freeman hit a 3-pointer to cut the Penguins lead to 80-78, but Lovelace's putback dunk with 31 seconds to go put the Penguins up four 82-78. Burns made two free throws with 10 seconds left to seal the win.

Youngstown State visits Green Bay, Sunday, Feb. 25. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. Eastern at the Kress Center in Green Bay, Wis.
