Penguins Drop Series Opener in Four Sets at Purdue Fort Wayne

Fort Wayne, Ind. — Youngstown State's volleyball team got 19 kills from junior Abbie Householder but couldn't keep pace offensively in a four-set loss at Purdue Fort Wayne on Friday evening. The scores from the Gates Sports Center were 23-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-19.

Householder finished with 19 kills while adding 13 digs, and Isabel Schaefbauer also recorded a double-double with 40 assists and 13 digs. Kelsey Cooper posted 10 kills in 16 attempts without committing an error, and Nyia Setla led the back-row defense with 14 digs.

Purdue Fort Wayne's Panna Ratkai posted a match-best 23 kills while hitting at a .271 clip, and the Mastodons finished with a 62-49 edge in kills while outhitting the Penguins .242-.200. The Mastodons added seven aces.

Youngstown State's only deficit in the opening set was 17-16, and the Penguins followed that with a 5-0 run that flipped the score to 21-17. The Mastodons caught the Penguins at 23 to force a timeout, but Householder got a kill from the middle of the net, and Dayan Malave blocked Ratkai's back-row attack on set point. That was one of five blocks for the Penguins in the opening set.

There were 11 ties and four lead changes in the first half of the second set, and the 25-21 final score was the largest margin for either team.

Ratkai had eight kills in the third set, including one with the score tied at 23. Jena Medearis and Iris Riegel then blocked Householder on set point to give Purdue Fort Wayne a 25-23 win and a 2-1 advantage in the match.

The Mastodons raced out to a 6-2 advantage in the fourth set, and they held at least a two-point margin until the Penguins went on a 5-1 run to get within 14-13. Ratkai had four kills in a five-point stretch to give a boost for the Mastodons to close out the match with a 25-19 win.

Youngstown State will play its season finale on Saturday against Purdue Fort Wayne at 3 p.m.
