Fort Wayne, Ind. — Youngstown State's volleyball team fell in its season finale in four sets on Saturday afternoon to Purdue Fort Wayne at the Gates Sports Center. The set scores were 25-19, 24-26, 25-21, 25-19.
Gabriela Machin and Abbie Householder both had 16 kills to lead the Penguins offensively. Householder added 11 digs for her 17th double-double of her junior season. Fifth-year senior setter Isabel Schaefbauer also had a double-double in the final match of her career with 37 assists and a match-high 21 digs.
Dayan Malave added six kills and three blocks, and Nyia Setla finished 11 digs in their final collegiate matches.
Panna Ratkai had 23 kills and hit .320 to lead Purdue Fort Wayne.
Youngstown State finishes the season with a 9-21 overall record and a 3-15 mark in Horizon League play, while the Mastodons improved to 17-14 overall and 10-8 against conference opponents.
YSU scored the first four points, and the Mastodons scored the next five in the opening set. Purdue Fort Wayne did not trail after the 4-0 start, but YSU was within one as late 18-17 following a Householder kill.
Purdue Fort Wayne led 18-13, but Youngstown State rallied to tie the score at 20 when Malave and Machin combined for a block. The Mastodons reclaimed advantages of 22-20 and 23-22, but but the Penguins scored four of the final five points of the set. Householder had two kills, and Machin had one during that final burst.
The Penguins led 18-16 in the third set, but the Mastodons went on a 7-1 run to pull ahead 23-19. YSU scored the next two points to put pressure on, but the Mastodons scored the final two to go up 2-1 in the match.
Purdue Fort Wayne scored eight of the first 10 points in the fourth set, and Youngstown State was never able to catch the 'Dons.
