Cleveland, Ohio – Youngstown State's Julia Marko won the Horizon League Individual Championship capping off a strong three days with a 6-2, 7-5 win on Sunday at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion.
Marko defeated Cleveland State's Oihane Vicario in straight sets to claim the crown after winning five matches at the new event. She won all five of her matches in straight sets and lost just 7 games in her first three contests. She defeated Cleveland State's Sima Heren in the semifinals on Saturday.
YSU had a strong singles showing overall winning 11 singles matches. Ghada Dirninger, Lorena Cedeno and Lili Minich both won their first two matches of the competition.
In doubles, the Penguins two tandems reached the semifinals. Cedeno and Marko picked up a pair of victories to reach the semis as did Minich and Dirninger. A pair of Cleveland State doubles pairings advanced to the finals.
YSU returns to action later this week at the ITA Midwest Regionals hosted by Ohio State in Columbus.
