Cincinnati, Ohio - The Youngstown State women's tennis team used a dominate effort in singles play to beat Milwaukee, 4-1, on Saturday in the semifinals of the Horizon League Championships at the Lindner Tennis Center.
The third-seed YSU advances to the Championship match tomorrow against fourth-seed Cleveland State. First serve for the rematch of the 2025 Championship is set for 3 p.m. That contest will be available on ESPN+.
The Penguins dropped the doubles point to Milwaukee, but would not be denied in singles play.
YSU won in straight sets at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles to oust the Panthers. Lorena Cedeno's victory at No. 4 singles clinched the victory for the Guins.
At No. 1, Hanna Telzynska won 6-3, 6-2 while Yeseniia Ovcharova collected a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3. At No. 4, Sarah Partida Garcia cruised to a 6-4, 6-2 victory. Cedeno clinched the dual with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 2.
In the other two matches, Yoana Dudova had a 7-5, 6-6 lead at No. 6 while Line Greyling was in a 6-1, 6-7, 0-1 battle at No. 5.
Milwaukee had defeated the Penguins earlier this season, but it marked the second straight year that YSU beat the Panthers in the HL semifinals.
The Vikings advanced to the finals by beating top-seed Oakland, 4-3.
