The Opening Kickoff
The Youngstown State women's soccer team (2-0) opens week two of the 2023 campaign when it visits Duquesne, Thursday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. before returning home to host Canisius, Sunday, Aug. 27, at 1 p.m. at Farmers National Bank Field.
Last Time Out
The Penguins started the season 2-0 for the first time since 2012 after knocking off St. Francis (Pa.), 3-1, on Aug. 17 and Akron, 1-0, on Aug. 20. Elis Klein Spindola, Abby Knight, and Chloe Weiland each scored against the Red Flash, while Maddie Keister scored the game-winner against the Zips. Brooklynn Kirkpatrick recorded both wins in the net.
The Duquesne Series
This is the 14th meeting between Youngstown State and Duquesne in a series that dates back to 1996. The Dukes own a 10-1-2 advantage in the all-time series and have won the last three contests. Youngstown States lone victory was a 1-0 win in 2012. The teams tied twice in 2016 and 2017 by a score of 1-1 in each game.

Duquesne enters the game with a 1-1-0 record after falling to Ohio, 3-0, on Aug. 17, and defeating American, 5-0, on Aug. 20. Maya Matesa leads the Dukes with two goals.
The Canisius Series
This is the 15th meeting between Youngstown State and Canisius in a series that dates back to 1996. The Golden Griffins lead the all-time series, 9-4-1. The last Penguins victory over Canisius was a 4-0 win in 2012.

Canisius enter the week with an 0-1-1 overall record after falling to Colgate, 4-0, on Aug. 17 and tying Binghamton, 0-0, on Aug. 20. The Golden Griffins host Detroit Mercy, Thursday, Aug. 24.

Keister Nets First Career Goal, Game-Winner
Junior Maddie Keister scored the first goal and game-winner of her career on Aug. 20 against Akron. Keister launched a free kick from 35 yards out on the left side and found to the top right corner of the net.
First Season Opening Win Since 2019
Youngstown State defeated St. Francis (Pa.), 3-1, in the 2023 season opener. It marks the first time since 2019 that the Penguins opened the season with a victory. It is also the first season-opening road win since the Penguins defeated Niagara, 2-1, on Aug. 23, 2013.
Most Goals in Opener Since 2010
The Penguins three goals in the season opener against St. Francis (Pa.) were the most to open a season since YSU defeated Robert Morris, 3-1, in 2010. It's also just the fourth time in program history the Penguins have scored at least three goal in the first game of the year.

Kirkpatrick Nearing All-Time Wins Record
Senior Brooklynn Kirkpatrick picked her 13th career victory after the Penguins' 1-0 win over Akron on Aug. 20. It marked her first shutout of the season and the 11th of her career. Kirkpatrick needs just one more victory to tie the all-time record at 14 and two more to break the mark.
Weiland Scores First Career Goal
Sophomore Chloe Weiland notched her first career goal against the St. Francis (Pa.) on Aug. 17. Weiland's goal came at the 84:42 mark of the game against the Red Flash to give the Penguins a 3-1 lead.
Tarzi Tacks on Another
The Penguins' leading scorer last season, Elis Klein Spindola, added to her scoring column with her first goal of the season against St. Francis (Pa.) on Aug. 17. She led the Penguins with five goals in 2022 and now has six during her career with the Penguins.
First 2-0 Start Since 2012
With wins over St. Francis (Pa.) on Aug. 17 and Akron on Aug. 20, Youngstown State posted its first 2-0 record to start the season since 2012. The last time Youngstown State started 3-0 was in 2012 when it began the year 4-0.
All-League Returners
Abriana Rondin was named to the All-Horizon League Second-Team while Taylor Berry was named to the All-Freshman Team. Rondin had three goals and two assists while Berry scored four goals and assisted on another. All three of Rondin's goals came in Horizon League action, including the game-winner against Purdue Fort Wayne in the Horizon League Championship semifinals. Berry, who had a game-tying goal against Oakland on Sept. 15, led the Penguins to their first tournament win since 2008 with two goals against Wright State in the quarterfinals on Oct. 30.
LaVigna Among Leaders
Regan LaVigna has moved her way into a pair of YSU all-time top 10 lists. She ranks tied for fourth all-time with nine career assists and tied for 10th with 23 total points. Last season, LaVigna posted three goals and three assists for nine total points.
Penguins Predicted Fourth
The Youngstown State women's soccer team was picked to finish fourth in the 2023 Horizon League Preseason Poll after a vote of the league's head coaches. The Penguins, who earned one first-place vote, totaled 84 points. Milwaukee was a near unanimous pick to win the league with 10 first-place votes and 120 points. Oakland was predicted to finish second with 93 points and Purdue Fort Wayne was third with 85 points, just one point ahead of the Penguins.

Recapping 2022
The Penguins posted an overall record of 9-8-3 and a 5-3-2 mark in Horizon League play and set the school records most wins in a season and in conference play.
After a slow start, the Penguins caught fire over the last half of the season going 5-1-1 to close out the regular season and defeated Wright State, 2-1, and Purdue Fort Wayne, 1-0, in the Horizon League Championship. Youngstown State eventually lost to Milwaukee, 1-0, in the Horizon League Championship game.
During its late season run, Youngstown State picked up wins over Green Bay (3-0), Northern Kentucky (1-0), Purdue Fort Wayne (1-0), IUPUI (2-0), and Robert Morris (3-1) in the regular-season finale.
The Penguins outscored their opponents, 16-8, and posted five shutouts over the last 10 contests.
