Josi Borum, Elise Moeller, Isabel Schaefbauer and Isidora Sisic have been named captains of the Youngstown State volleyball team for the 2023 season.
Borum and Sisic are serving as captains for the second straight season, while Moeller and Schaefbauer are first-time captains. Head Coach Aline Scott selected the quartet from the roster of 15 student-athletes.
"Great leadership is always the key to the success of any group," Scott said. "Our captains lead by example and show grace, compassion, drive and competitiveness daily. I have full confidence that our four captains will be able to guide our team through a very competitive season."
All four student-athletes are transfers who began their collegiate careers at other Division I institutions. Borum and Sisic arrived from Chicago State for the spring 2021 season, and Moeller and Schaefbauer are entering their second seasons as Penguins. Moeller transferred from Evansville, and Schaefbauer arrived from Winthrop.
Borum was a Second-Team All-Horizon League selection in 2022 after leading the nation with 10 triple-doubles. She ranked second on the team in kills, assists, digs and blocks while also ranking third in aces, and she had four more triple-doubles than any other Division I player. She ranked among the top 10 leaders in the conference in hitting percentage and assists per set, and she became the 13th player in school history to reach 1,000 career assists.
Moeller was named the program's teammate of the year in her first season as a Penguin in 2022. She appeared in 16 matches and averaged 1.35 kills and 1.23 digs per set. She had at least nine kills in three different matches, including in the quarterfinals of the Horizon League Volleyball Championship.
Schaefbauer was the only Penguin to play in every set last season while sharing setting duties with Borum in YSU's 6-2 offense. She paced the team with 622 assists and 5.27 assists per set in her first year with the program. She reached the 30-assist plateau three times during the season, and she posted seven double-doubles.
Sisic served as the Penguins' primary libero in 2022 while being named Academic All-Horizon League and Academic All-District. She led the conference in total aces with 50, which tied the school record for the most in the rally-scoring era. She also ranked seventh in the conference with 3.70 digs per set, and her 433 digs were the eighth-most ever in a season by a Penguin.
Youngstown State will begin the 2023 season by hosting the DoubleTree by Hilton YSU Invitational, presented by Mercy Health, on Aug. 25-26 at Beeghly Center.
