The Youngstown State baseball team hit six home runs on the day to back strong pitching performances on its way to a doubleheader sweep of Milwaukee on Saturday at Eastwood Field. The Penguins rallied late to win game one 8-6 before earning a decisive 11-2 victory in the nightcap.
The Penguins scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to rally from a 6-5 deficit in the opener before scoring the first eight runs of game two.
Youngstown State has won three straight games to improve to 10-32 overall and 5-14 in Horizon League play while Milwaukee falls to 20-20 overall and 9-10 in league action.
Game 1 Recap
The Youngstown State baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to overcome a 6-5 deficit and earn an 8-6 victory over Milwaukee in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Eastwood Field.
The Penguins led 5-1 after two innings before the Panthers scored in four straight frames to take a 6-5 edge. After falling behind in the top of the seventh, YSU responded by scoring three times in the home half of the inning on its way to the series-opening victory.
Steven D'Eusanio went 3-for-4 with a three-run home run and five RBIs to lead the Penguins offensively. Trey Law was 2-for-5 with an RBI single and two runs scored while RJ Sherwood belted a two-run home run.
YSU starter Braden Gebhardt allowed five runs, four of them earned, on nine hits with six strikeouts over six innings in a no-decision. Patrick Gumto was responsible for one unearned run while not allowing a hit over 1.1 innings of relief to earn the victory. Kenny Misik recorded the final two outs of the eighth inning before Casey Marshalwitz tossed a scoreless ninth to collect his third save of the season. YSU's three relievers combined to allow just one unearned run on one hit over three innings of work.
Milwaukee jumped in front 1-0 when Luke Seidel led off the top of the first inning with a solo home run to left center field.
YSU responded immediately with three runs on three hits in the home half of the first inning to take a 3-1 lead. Law hit a leadoff single and Padraig O'Shaughnessy drew a one-out walk to set up a three-run home run to right center by D'Eusanio.
The Penguins pushed their lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the second inning when Andre Good hit a leadoff double and Sherwood followed two batters later with a two-run blast over the left field wall.
The Panthers plated a single run on a pair of hits in the top of the fourth inning to pull within 5-2. Justin Hausser drew a one-out walk and came around to score on a two-out RBI double by Tommy Benson.
Milwaukee scored another single run on two hits in the top of the fifth inning to cut YSU's lead to 5-3. Marcus Cline hit a leadoff single and scored from third on a two-out RBI single by Mark Connelly.
The Panthers posted two runs on two hits and two errors in the top of the sixth to even the score at 5-5. Hausser hit a leadoff single, Benson followed with a double and Nate DeYoung brought home Hausser with an RBI groundout. After a strikeout, Benson was able to score on a throwing error to knot the score at five runs apiece.
Milwaukee scored an unearned run with two outs in the top of the seventh to regain a 6-5 lead. Connelly was hit by a pitch, advanced two bases on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out fielding error to put the Panthers back in front.
Youngstown State answered with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the seventh to regain an 8-6 advantage. Ian Francis drew a leadoff walk and was lifted for pinch runner Chase Franken. Franken reached second base on a failed pickoff attempt and scored on a one-out RBI single by Law to even the score. After Milwaukee starter Riley Frey was relieved by Sam Mathews, Braeden O'Shaughnessy singled and advanced to second on a groundout. D'Eusanio then delivered a two-out, two-run single to left field to put the Penguins ahead.
Frey suffered the loss for Milwaukee after allowing seven runs on nine hits over 6.1 innings. Mathews was charged with one run on two hits in two thirds of an inning out of the bullpen.

Travis Perry allowed one unearned run over 6.1 innings to lead the Youngstown State baseball team to an 11-2 victory over Milwaukee in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at Eastwood Field.
The Penguins scored twice in the first inning, four times in the second and once in the third and fourth to build an 8-0 advantage before the Panthers scored a single run in the seventh. YSU added three runs on a pair of home runs in the home half of the eighth and Milwaukee scored a single run in the ninth for the final margin.
Youngstown State smashed four home runs while outhitting Milwaukee 14-8 in game two.
Perry surrendered just one unearned run on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts over 6.1 innings to earn his fourth victory of the season. The fifth-year senior right-hander retired the side in order in the second inning while blanking the Panthers over the first six frames. Zach Stayduhar was charged with one run on one hit over 2.2 strong innings of relief.
Padraig O'Shaughnessy went 3-for-5 with two home runs and five RBIs while his brother Braeden O'Shaughnessy went 3-for-4 with an RBI double and scored four times. Matt Thompson went 2-for-4 with a solo home run while Turner Grau was 2-for-4 a double. Sherwood added his second home run of the day in the late stages of the nightcap.

Youngstown State scored another single run in the bottom of the fourth when Braeden O'Shaughnessy drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on an RBI groundout by D'Eusanio.
Milwaukee got on the board with an unearned run in the top of the seventh inning. Hausser reached on an error to begin the frame and came around to score on a wild pitch to cut YSU's lead to 8-1.
