The Youngstown State baseball team banged out 12 hits, scored all of its runs in the first four innings and held on for a 12-11 win over Milwaukee on Sunday afternoon at Eastwood Field.
The Penguins improve to 11-32 overall and 6-14 in the Horizon League while the Panthers fall to 20-21 overall and 9-11 in the league. YSU completed the the three-game series sweep of Milwaukee with its fourth consecutive victory.
Turner Grau and Andre Good each had three hits while Steven D'Eusanio and Ian Francis had two hits apiece. Francis also drove in four runs with his first-career grand slam.
The Penguins led 12-4 through five innings before the Panthers tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, one in the seventh, two in the eighth, and two in the ninth.
Youngstown State jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings by scoring twice in the first and four times in the second.
In the bottom first, D'Eusanio's slow-rolling infield single to shortstop scored Braeden O'Shaughnessy from second base. D'Eusanio then scored on a fielding error to put YSU up 2-0.
Good doubled to lead off the bottom of the second and walks to Francis and Sherwood loaded the bases. Law singled to left field to plate Good, and Braeden O'Shaughnessy's sacrifice fly to left field scored Francis. Padraig O'Shaughnessy added another single to left field scoring Sherwood to put YSU up 5-0 and Grau's single down the right-field line scored Law for the Penguins' fourth run of the inning to take a 6-0 lead.
Milwaukee scored four in the top of the fourth to cut YSU's lead to 6-4.
YSU responded with six runs in the bottom half fourth. Padraig O'Shaughnessy walked to lead off the inning and advanced to third on D'Eusanio's single up the middle. Grau singled to center field to plate O'Shaughnessy and Law's infield single loaded the bases. Francis then crushed a 1-2 pitch over the left-center field wall to provide the Penguins an eight-run lead.
Kenny Misik (2-4) picked up is second win of the season while Casey Marshalwitz recorded his fourth save of the campaign.
The Penguins will visit Purdue Fort Wayne for a three-game Horizon League series staring Friday, May 3. First pitch for the series opener at Mastodon Field is slated for 3 p.m.
