Weekend Preview

  • The Youngstown State baseball team (3-10) will open a three-game series at Kansas State (8-5) on Friday at 5 p.m. ET at Tointon Family Stadium in Manhattan, Kan. The Penguins and Wildcats will proceed to play on Saturday at 5 p.m. ET before closing the series on Sunday at 11 a.m. ET.
  • All three games of this weekend's series will be broadcast live on Big 12 Now on ESPN+. Live stats will be available through links on YSUsports.com. Fans can also follow @YSUBaseball on Twitter for live updates.
  • Fifth-year senior right-hander Travis Perry will take the mound for the Penguins in the series opener on Friday, junior right-hander Nick Perez is scheduled to start on Saturday and Sunday's starter is to be announced.
  • The Penguins will be facing the Wildcats for the first time in program history.
  • Youngstown State is coming off a 22-1 setback at Kent State in its first midweek contest of the 2023 season on Tuesday after splitting a four-game series at Baylor last weekend. Friday's 7-5 victory over the Bears marked YSU's first win over a Big 12 opponent since 2013. The Penguins now have four wins over Power Five opponents in the last two seasons and eight during Dan Bertolini's tenure as head coach.
  • Redshirt junior shortstop Trey Law was named Horizon League Co-Batter of the Week on Feb. 28 after batting .556 and slugging .611 with 10 hits in 18 at bats over four games played at Memphis on Feb. 24-26. In addition, senior right-hander Travis Perry was named Horizon League Pitcher of the Week after leading YSU to a 6-2 victory in the series opener at Memphis on Feb. 24. Perry allowed one run on two hits with a career-high 10 strikeouts over six innings.
  • YSU ranks second in the Horizon League with 108 hits, 25 doubles and 165 total bases while ranking tied for second with 10 home runs. The Penguins also rank third in the league with 65 runs scored, 60 RBIs and a .384 slugging percentage In addition, YSU's pitching staff leads the Horizon League with 94 strikeouts.
  • Senior right-hander Travis Perry leads the Horizon League with 21 strikeouts while ranking second with 16.1 innings pitched and a .180 opponent batting average. Perry also ranks fourth in the circuit with a 3.86 ERA.
  • Senior infielder Steven D'Eusanio leads the Horizon League with seven doubles while ranking eighth with 14 hits. Junior infielder Trey Law ranks second in the league with 18 hits and eighth with a .360 batting average.
  • Senior infielder Braeden O'Shaughnessy ranks third in the Horizon League with 17 hits and sixth with 10 runs scored. Senior first baseman Padraig O'Shaughnessy ranks fifth in the league with 15 hits, third with 12 RBIs and sixth with four doubles.
  • Junior right-hander Nick Perez ranks seventh in the Horizon League with 13 strikeouts while ranking fifth with 14 innings pitched. Sophomore right-hander Brandon Mikos ranks fourth in the league with 14.2 innings pitched while ranking seventh with a .276 opponent batting average.
  • YSU was picked fourth in the 2023 Horizon League Baseball Preseason Coaches Poll. Wright State was tabbed as the preseason favorite while Oakland was picked second and Milwaukee was selected third. Northern Kentucky came in at fifth while Purdue Fort Wayne was slotted sixth. The Penguins were picked to finish third by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and fifth by D1Baseball.com.

Scouting The Wildcats

  • Kansas State is 8-5 on the season after a 6-5 victory over Stonehill on Monday. The Wildcats have won four straight games coming into Friday's series opener against YSU. Kansas State owns a 4-0 home record so far this season.
  • Junior infielder Nick Goodwin is batting .348 and slugging .696 with a team-high 16 hits, four home runs and 14 RBIs. Goodwin was named Honorable Mention All-Big 12 last season. Sophomore infielder/outfielder Brady Day is batting .333 and slugging .528 with four doubles and 10 RBIs. Senior outfielder Cole Johnson has three home runs and team-high 15 RBIs.
  • Junior right-hander Shay Hartis has a 1-0 record and a 3.77 ERA in 14.1 innings over a team-high six appearances and one start. Senior left-hander Owen Boerema has a 1-0 record, a 4.72 ERA and a team-high 18 strikeouts in 13.1 innings over three starts. Sophomore right-hander Tyson Neighbors has a 2-1 record, a 1.86 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 9.2 innings over five relief appearances.
  • The Wildcats lead the Big 12 and rank 25th nationally with 22 home runs as a team through games played on March 7. Kansas State also ranks second in the Big 12 and 10th nationally with 83 walks as a squad.
  • Kansas State posted a 29-29 overall record and an 8-16 mark in Big 12 play in 2022. The Wildcats were picked seventh out of nine teams in 2023 Big 12 Preseason Poll. K-State has 17 returning letterwinners and 19 newcomers on its 2023 roster.

at Baylor - Friday, March 3 // W 7-5

  • Youngstown State scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning to overcome a three-run deficit and rally for a 7-5 victory over Baylor in the series opener on Friday at Baylor Ballpark in Waco, Texas.
  • The Penguins earned their first win over a Big 12 opponent since a 10-7 victory over West Virginia on Feb. 22, 2013. YSU also claimed its third win over a Power Five opponent in the last two seasons.
  • YSU starter Travis Perry allowed just one unearned run on two hits with seven strikeouts over 5.1 innings in a no-decision. Brandin Anderson earned his first collegiate win after tossing a scoreless inning of relief while Casey Marshalwitz worked a scoreless ninth inning to earn his first save of the season.
  • Matt Thompson had a career-high four hits as he went 4-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the Penguins offensively. Grau went 2-for-5 with the go-ahead two-run double while Wiesen drove in two runs as well. Six different Penguins recorded a hit as YSU outhit Baylor 10-5.

at Baylor - Saturday, March 4 (Game 1) // L 5-12

  • Baylor scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 5-5 tie and earn a 12-5 victory over Youngstown State in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Baylor Ballpark in Waco, Texas.
  • Braeden O'Shaughnessy went 2-for-4 with an RBI single while Turner Grau tripled, walked and scored two runs. Andre Good and Steven D'Eusanio each doubled and scored a run while Ian Francis singled and drove in a run.
  • YSU starter Nick Perez allowed five runs on six hits over five innings in a no-decision. Trey Pancake allowed one hit and struck out two batters over 1.1 scoreless innings in his first collegiate pitching appearance. Kenny Misik suffered the loss after allowing two runs and striking out three batters over 1.1 innings.

at Baylor - Saturday, March 4 (Game 2) // W 7-5

  • Youngstown State scored once in the ninth and twice in the 10th to rally for a 7-5 extra-inning victory over Baylor in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.
  • Freshman right-hander Aidan English got the game-clinching strikeout to earn his first-career victory. The North Lima, Ohio, native did not allow a hit over a career-high three innings of relief in just his second collegiate appearance.
  • Padraig O'Shaughnessy went 3-for-5 with a double and four RBIs while Trey Law went 3-for-5 with a double and the go-ahead RBI single. Braeden O'Shaughnessy went 2-for-6 with a double and two runs scored while Andre Good was 2-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored. Eli Brown set a new career high with two hits as he went 2-for-5 with an RBI single. The Penguins tied their season high with 15 hits as they outhit the Bears 15-5.

at Baylor - Sunday, March 5 // L 7-9

  • Youngstown State rallied from a three-run deficit to tie the game late before Baylor scored once in the seventh and once in the eighth to earn a 9-7 victory in the series finale on Sunday at Baylor Ballpark in Waco, Texas.
  • Eli Brown went 2-for-2 with an RBI double, two walks and two runs scored. Trey Law was 2-for-3 with an RBI single and a run scored while Braeden O'Shaughnessy went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • YSU starter Patrick Gumto allowed four runs on three hits in one inning of work. Zach Stayduhar was responsible for three runs, one of them earned, on three hits with a career-high three strikeouts over a career-high three innings pitched. Kenny Misik and Trey Pancake combined to throw three innings of scoreless relief before Braden Gebhardt allowed two runs over two innings to suffer the loss.
