Game Preview

The Youngstown State baseball team (3-9) will play its first midweek contest of the 2023 season on Tuesday when it faces Kent State (7-4) at 1 p.m. at Olga Mural Field at Schoonover Stadium in Kent, Ohio.
UPDATE: First pitch for Tuesday's game has been moved up from 3 p.m. to 1 p.m.

The Penguins are coming off a four-game split at Baylor this past weekend. YSU won the series opener 7-5 on Friday for its first win over a Big 12 opponent since 2013. The Penguins also earned a 7-5 victory in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday. YSU now has four wins over Power Five opponents in the last two seasons.
Youngstown State will be playing Kent State for the first time since April 3, 2019. The Penguins earned a 4-3 win in 11 innings at Eastwood Field in the most recent meeting. YSU will be playing at Kent State for the first time since a 10-5 loss at Olga Mural Field at Schoonover Stadium on March 12, 2019.
Junior infielder Trey Law ranks second in the Horizon League with 18 hits, sixth with a .383 batting average, seventh with a .491 on-base percentage and fourth with seven walks.
Senior infielder Braeden O'Shaughnessy ranks top 10 in the Horizon League in batting average (.340), hits (17), runs scored (10) and home runs (2).
Senior first baseman Padraig O'Shaughnessy rank top 10 in the Horizon League in batting average (.357), hits (15), RBIs (12), doubles (4) and on-base percentage (.429).
Senior infielder Steven D'Eusanio leads the Horizon League with seven doubles while ranking tied for fifth with two home runs and seventh with 14 hits.
Senior right-hander Travis Perry leads the Horizon League with 21 strikeouts while ranking second with 16.1 innings pitched and a .180 opponent batting average. He also ranks fifth in the league with a 3.86 ERA.

Scouting The Golden Flashes

Kent State is 7-4 overall and has won five straight games after sweeping a three-game series at UT Martin this past weekend. Tuesday will be the Golden Flashes' home opener at Olga Mural Field at Schoonover Stadium.
Junior first baseman Aidan Longwell is batting .426 and slugging .723 with six doubles, a triple, two home runs and 17 RBIs. Senior catcher Justin Miknis is batting .347 and slugging .449 with two doubles, one home run and nine RBIs.
Senior right-hander Mitchell Scott boasts a 1-0 record, a 2.08 ERA, 11 strikeouts and two saves in 8.2 innings over a team-high six appearances. Junior left-hander Joe Whitman has a 1-1 record, a 2.30 ERA and a team-high 22 strikeouts in 15.2 innings over three starts. Senior pitcher Ben Cruikshank has a 1-0 record, a 2.70 ERA and 21 strikeouts in a team-high 16.2 innings over three starts.
The Golden Flashes posted a 24-29 overall record and a 19-19 mark in Mid-American Conference play in 2022. Kent State was picked third out of 11 teams in the MAC Baseball Preseason Coaches Poll.

Recapping Last Week

At Baylor – March 3 // W 7-5

Youngstown State scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning to overcome a three-run deficit and rally for a 7-5 victory over Baylor in the series opener on Friday at Baylor Ballpark in Waco, Texas.
The Bears scored once in the bottom of the third before the Penguins evened the score with one run in the top of the sixth. YSU took a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh before Baylor answered a pair of runs in the home half of the inning. The Bears added two runs in the bottom of the eighth before the Penguins struck for five runs in the ninth to earn the 7-5 victory.
The Penguins earned their first win over a Big 12 opponent since a 10-7 victory over West Virginia on Feb. 22, 2013.
YSU starter Travis Perry allowed just one unearned run on two hits with seven strikeouts over 5.1 innings in a no-decision. The fifth-year senior right-hander retired the side in order in the first inning. Perry did not allow a hit in four different innings, and he recorded multiple strikeouts in three different frames.
Brandin Anderson earned his first collegiate win after tossing a scoreless inning of relief while Casey Marshalwitz worked a scoreless ninth inning to earn his first save of the season.
Thompson had a career-high four hits as he went 4-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the Penguins offensively. Grau went 2-for-5 with the go-ahead two-run double while Wiesen drove in two runs as well. Six different Penguins recorded a hit as YSU outhit Baylor 10-5.

At Baylor – March 4 (Game 1) // L 5-12

Baylor scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 5-5 tie and earn a 12-5 victory over Youngstown State in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Baylor Ballpark in Waco, Texas.
The Bears scored once in the first inning before the Penguins tied it with a single run in the fourth. Baylor scored once in the fourth and three times in the fifth to a build a 5-1 lead before YSU struck twice in the seventh and twice in the eighth to tie the game 5-5. The Bears exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull away and even the series at a game apiece.
Braeden O'Shaughnessy went 2-for-4 with an RBI single while Turner Grau tripled, walked and scored two runs. Andre Good and Steven D'Eusanio each doubled and scored a run while Ian Francis singled and drove in a run.
YSU starter Nick Perez allowed five runs on six hits with a pair of strikeouts over five innings in a no-decision. Trey Pancake allowed one hit and struck out two batters over 1.1 scoreless innings in his first collegiate pitching appearance. Kenny Misik suffered the loss after allowing two runs on one hit and striking out three batters over 1.1 innings. Casey Marshalwitz was responsible for five runs on two hits in one third of an inning.

At Baylor – March 4 (Game 2) // W 7-5

Youngstown State scored once in the ninth and twice in the 10th to rally for a 7-5 extra-inning victory over Baylor in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at Baylor Ballpark in Waco, Texas.
Trailing 5-4, YSU rallied in the top of the ninth as Braeden O'Shaughnessy hit a one-out double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when his brother Padraig O'Shaughnessy delivered a two-out RBI single up the middle to even the score 5-5.
Good led off the top of the 10th inning with a double and Eddie Saucedo followed with a single to set up a one-out RBI single by Trey Law that give the Penguins a 6-5 advantage. Grau then brought home pinch runner RJ Sherwood with a sacrifice fly for the final run of the game.
Freshman right-hander Aidan English worked around a pair of two-out walks in the bottom of the 10th to get the game-clinching strikeout and earn his first-career victory. The North Lima, Ohio, native did not allow a hit over a career-high three innings of relief in just his second collegiate appearance. English retired the side in order in the eighth inning.
Padraig O'Shaughnessy went 3-for-5 with a double and four RBIs while Law went 3-for-5 with a double and the go-ahead RBI single. Braeden O'Shaughnessy went 2-for-6 with a double and two runs scored while Good was 2-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored. Eli Brown set a new career high with two hits as he went 2-for-5 with an RBI single. The Penguins tied their season high with 15 hits as they outhit the Bears 15-5.
YSU starter Brandon Mikos was responsible for one run on three hits with three strikeouts over 4.2 innings before being forced to leave the game due to injury. The sophomore right-hander retired the first six batters he faced. Zach Stayduhar recorded the final out of the fifth before giving way to Will Shaffer who allowed three runs on two hits in one inning of work. Cam Marshalwitz was charged with one unearned run during his one inning on the mound.

At Baylor – March 5 // L 7-9

Youngstown State rallied from a three-run deficit to tie the game late before Baylor scored once in the seventh and once in the eighth to earn a 9-7 victory in the series finale on Sunday at Baylor Ballpark in Waco, Texas.
Eli Brown went 2-for-2 with an RBI double, two walks and two runs scored. Trey Law was 2-for-3 with an RBI single and a run scored while Braeden O'Shaughnessy went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Steven D'Eusanio doubled and drove in two runs while Turner Grau and Eddie Saucedo also added RBIs for the Penguins.
YSU starter Patrick Gumto allowed four runs on three hits in one inning of work. Zach Stayduhar was responsible for three runs, one of them earned, on three hits with a career-high three strikeouts over a career-high three innings pitched. Kenny Misik and Trey Pancake combined to throw three innings of scoreless relief before Braden Gebhardt surrendered two runs on three hits over two innings to suffer the loss.
