Perry Pitches Penguins to Doubleheader Split at Milwaukee

Travis Perry allowed one unearned run over a season-high seven innings in game one to lead the Youngstown State baseball team to a doubleheader split against Milwaukee on Friday at Franklin Field in Franklin, Wis. The Penguins won 2-1 in game one before falling 9-2 in game two.

Youngstown State is now 5-17 overall and 2-3 in Horizon League play while Milwaukee is 9-11 overall and 1-4 in league action.

Trey Law tied his career high with four hits in game one by going 4-for-5 with a double and a run scored. The junior shortstop extended his hitting streak to eight games before having it snapped in game two. Law has now hit safely in 17 of his last 19 games.

Game 1 Recap

Travis Perry allowed one unearned run and scattered five hits with six strikeouts over a season-high seven innings to lead the Youngstown State baseball team to a 2-1 victory over Milwaukee in game one of Friday's doubleheader at Franklin Field in Franklin, Wis.

Perry was masterful once again for the Penguins as he earned his third victory of the season. The fifth-year senior right-hander retired the side in order in the third and sixth innings, and he recorded a strikeout in five different frames. The only run against him scored following a two-out error in the bottom of the fourth. The Oil City, Pa., native only walked two batters as he threw 76 of his 108 pitches for strikes.

Braden Gebhardt came out of the bullpen and worked two scoreless innings of relief to earn his first career save. The freshman left-hander allowed just one hit and had three strikeouts. The Howland, Ohio, native retired the side in order in the eighth.

Law matched his career high with four hits by going 4-for-5 with a double and a run scored. The junior shortstop, who extended his hitting streak to eight games, has now hit safely in 17 of his last 19 games.

Braeden O'Shaughnessy went 2-for-3 with two walks and a run scored while Ian Francis and Matt Thompson also had two hits apiece. The Penguins outhit the Panthers 13-6 for the contest and were able to hang on for the victory despite leaving 12 runners on base.

The Penguins took an early lead with two runs on two hits in the top of the third inning. Law reached with a leadoff bunt single and came around to score on an RBI groundout by Steven D'Eusanio. Braeden O'Shaughnessy singled and scored when his brother Padraig O'Shaughnessy reached on a fielder's choice to give YSU a 2-0 edge.

The Panthers got on the board with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Mark Connelly drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out fielding error to cut YSU's lead to 2-1.

Milwaukee starter Riley Frey suffered the loss after allowing two runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts over 6.2 innings. Nick Gilhaus allowed three hits and struck out three batters in 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Aaron Chapman and Tommy Benson each had two hits to pace the Panthers offensively.

Game 2 Recap

Milwaukee scored seven runs over the first three innings on its way to a 9-2 victory over the Youngstown State baseball team in game two of Friday's doubleheader at Franklin Field in Franklin, Wis.

The Panthers scored three times in the first and four times in the third to provide plenty of cushion for their starter Luke Hansel, who allowed two runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings to earn the victory.

Padraig O'Shaughnessy went 1-for-2 with an RBI single and two walks while D'Eusanio delivered an RBI single. Braeden O'Shaughnessy, Turner Grau, Clay Wiesen, Andre Good and Eli Brown also had base hits for the Penguins.

YSU starter Nick Perez took the loss after surrendering seven runs on eight hits in 2.2 innings while Kenny Misik was responsible for two runs on two hits over two innings of relief. Patrick Gumto did not allow a run over a season-high 2.1 innings of relief while Brandin Anderson retired the side in order in the eighth.

The Panthers plated three runs on three hits in the home half of the first inning to grab an early 3-0 lead. A pair of runs scored on a one-out double by Connelly before Justin Hausser drove home a run with a sacrifice fly.

Milwaukee added four runs on four hits in the bottom of the third inning to increase its advantage to 7-0. Hausser hit a one-out RBI single and came around to score on a wild pitch before Luke Seidel delivered a two-out, two-run single down the left field line.

The Penguins got on the board in the top of the fourth when Grau hit a leadoff single, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Padraig O'Shaughnessy.

The Panthers got the run back in the bottom of the fourth when Chapman drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on an RBI double by Connelly. Milwaukee pushed its lead to 9-1 in the bottom of the fifth when Jack Thelen drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on an RBI groundout by Seidel.

Youngstown State scored its second and final run in the top of the seventh when Law drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out RBI single by D'Eusanio.

Seidel went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored to lead Milwaukee's offense. Eight different Panthers recorded at least one hit in the ballgame.

The Penguins and Panthers will attempt to finish their three-game Horizon League series on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and YSNLive.com.
