Toledo scored five runs over the first two innings on its way to a 7-2 victory over the Youngstown State baseball team on Tuesday at Scott Park in Toledo, Ohio.
The Rockets plated one run in the first inning and four in the second before adding single runs in the fifth and seventh. The Penguins, who outhit the Rockets 9-5 for the game, struck for single runs in the sixth and eighth innings but left a total of 13 runners on base.
Ian Francis drove in both of YSU's runs as he went 2-for-3 with a home run, an RBI double and a walk. Matt Thompson also had a pair of hits as he went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
YSU starter Aidan English took the loss after allowing five runs on two hits and four walks in two innings of work. Cam Marshalwitz was responsible for one run on two hits over three innings of relief while Brandin Anderson, Kenny Misik, Patrick Gumto and Braden Gebhardt combined to allow just one unearned run on one hit over the final three frames.
The Rockets took an early 1-0 lead with a single run in the bottom of the first inning. Jeron Williams drew a leadoff walk, stole second and third and scored on an RBI groundout by Garret Pike.
Toledo pushed its lead to 5-0 with four runs in the home half of the second inning. Mason Sykes drew a leadoff walk, Brian Fry followed with a bunt single and both runners scored on a one-out throwing error. Later in the frame, Williams delivered an RBI double and Owen Jackson drove home a run with an RBI groundout.
The Rockets increased their advantage to 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth when Pike hit a solo home run over the wall in right field.
The Penguins got on the board in the top of the sixth inning when Matt Thompson hit a leadoff single and scored on an RBI double by Ian Francis.
Toledo got its lead back to six runs at 7-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Williams hit a leadoff single and came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Pike.
YSU scored the final run of the game in the top of the eighth when Francis led off the inning with a solo home run to left field.
Toledo starter Dane Hall surrendered two hits and four walks over four scoreless innings while RJ Schunck was awarded the victory after tossing an inning of scoreless relief.
Williams went 2-for-3 with an RBI double and two runs scored to pace the Rockets offensively while Pike hit a home run and drove in three runs.
The Penguins will return home to Eastwood Field on Friday to begin a three-game Horizon League series against Purdue Fort Wayne at 5 p.m.
