Bowling Begins Exciting March Stretch at Nebraska’s Big Red Invitational

The Youngstown State bowling team starts a busy and exciting March schedule this weekend as it travels to Lincoln, Neb., for the three-day Big Red Invitational. The University of Nebraska is hosting the tournament, which runs from Friday through Sunday, at Hollywood Bowl.

All of the Penguins' matches will be streamed live on the YSUsports YouTube channel, and results will be posted when they become available on the team's Twitter and Facebook accounts.

The Penguins are ranked seventh in the most-recent National Tenpin Coaches Association Top 25 poll, and they are fourth in the NCAA's RPI rankings that were released on Feb. 16. The Big Red Invitational is another opportunity for Youngstown State to compete against some of the nation's top teams as it hopes to continue building a resume for the postseason.

Tournament Format

The Big Red Invitational has a unique format where the tournament title will be awarded to the team with the highest per-game average over the three days of the event. All 10 teams will bowl the other nine teams in the field once, and there will be three additional matches based on position in the standings.

There will be five Baker matches on Friday beginning at 10 a.m. Eastern, and total pinfall will determine the winners of each head-to-head match. Five traditional matches will follow on Saturday starting at 10:10 a.m. Eastern with pinfall again determining the winners. The top three teams will receive an award, and the top five individual averages from Saturday's traditional matches will be named to the all-tournament team.

Scouting the Field

This will be the smallest field that Youngstown State will compete in during the regular season as just 10 teams will take the lanes at Hollywood Bowl.
