The Youngstown State women's lacrosse team suffered a 16-13 loss to non-conference opponent Duquesne at the Watson and Tressel Training Site on Friday.
The Penguins fall to 1-3 on the season while Duquesne improves to 1-3.
Natalie Calandra-Ryan led all scorers with six goals and tallied a game-high 11 draw controls. Calandra-Ryan also added an assist for a seven-point performance.
Erin Clark (2) and Sydney Bumstead (2) also scored multiple goals for the Penguins. Clark also added two assists while Bumstead added one. Ali Korin, Jordan Miller, and Ally Garrett each scored a goal apiece to round out the Penguins' scoring effort.
Aryss Lindsey led all defenders with four caused turnovers and also grabbed three ground balls and netted three draw controls. Mikaela Staranko had four saves on 26 Duquesne shots and finished with a .200 save percentage.
Delaney Rodriguez-Shaw and Chelsea Evans led the Dukes' scoring effort with four apiece.
The Penguins struck first to open the game when Miller accepted a pass from Clark and fired it into the net at the 13:20 mark of the first, starting the game 1-0.
Duquesne answered with two goals of its own in the first before Calandra-Ryan found the back of the net twice in 12 seconds to give the Penguins a 3-2 lead headed into the second quarter.
Bumstead scored quickly in the second on an assist from Calandra-Ryan to put the Penguins up two, 4-2, at the 14:31 mark of the second quarter.
The Dukes scored five straight goals to take a 7-4 lead before Korin fired a Bumstead pass into the net with 4:15 remaining in the first half. The Guins headed to halftime down two, 7-5.
Duquesne opened the half with three goals in a row before YSU returned the favor with three of their own, two unassisted goals by Calandra-Ryan and a Bumstead free-position goal, making the score 10-8 at the 6:35 mark of the third.
Clark split up a pair of Dukes' goals with an unassisted of her own to close out the third quarter, YSU down 12-9.
The Penguins opened the final quarter with back-to-back goals, one by Clark on an assist from Korin and the other Calandra-Ryan's fifth score of the day.
The Penguins and Dukes traded goals up until the 6:46 mark of the fourth, with YSU scores by Calandra-Ryan and Garrett, before the Dukes scored two to close out the game.
Youngstown State will hit the road for the first time in 2023 when they head to Niagara Falls, N.Y. to take on Niagara on Thursday, March 2. First draw is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Niagara Field.
