The Youngstown State women's lacrosse team scored six goals in the fourth quarter but came up short against Marquette in an 18-11 loss at the Watson and Tressel Training Site on Friday.
The Penguins fall to 1-1 on the season while the Golden Eagles improve to 2-0.
Freshman Ally Garrett led the Penguins' scoring effort with four goals on just four total shots. Natalie Calandra-Ryan netted a team-high six points on three goals and three assists for her second hat-trick of the season. Calandra-Ryan also caused three turnovers and grabbed three ground balls for an impressive all-around performance.
Sydney Bumstead also had a multi-goal outing with two on the day. Ali Korin and Molly Sheridan combined for the Penguins' remaining two goals with one apiece.
Defensively, Mikaela Staranko tallied 15 saves on 43 Butler shots and only gave up two scores in the final quarter.
For Marquette, Shea Garcia led the team with four goals while Mary Schumer added three goals and five assists for an eight-point game.
At the 13:10 mark of the fourth quarter, Sheridan scored an unassisted goal to start a 6-2 scoring run by the Penguins.
Following an answer by the Golden Eagles, the Penguins scored four goals in just four minutes of play with goals by Garrett, Calandra-Ryan, and Bumstead to make the score 17-10 with 6:49 remaining in the game.
Marquette scored one more goal before Garrett found the back of the net on an assist from Calandra-Ryan with 44 seconds to play to close out the game, 11-18.
The Penguins were off to a slow start after three unanswered goals by Marquette to start the game. Bumstead was the first on the board for the Penguins at the 9:03 mark of the first quarter to make the score 3-1.
YSU's only other goal of the quarter was off a free-position attempt by Korin, and the Penguins ended the first down 5-2.
Youngstown State couldn't find its rhythm in the second quarter when Marquette opened with a 5-0 scoring run. Garrett scored the Penguins' only goal of the quarter on an assist from Calandra-Ryan, and the Penguins entered halftime down eight, 11-3.
Garrett scored the first goal of the second half at the 12:57 mark before the Golden Eagles would score four unanswered. Calandra-Ryan found the back of the net on an assist from Garrett with 2:26 remaining to make the score 5-16 headed into the final quarter of play.
The Penguins will be back at the Watson and Tressel Training Site to host non-conference opponent Cincinnati on Wednesday, Feb. 22. First draw is set for 4 p.m. against the Bearcats.
