YSU Student-Athletes Have Tremendous Academic Success in Fall

Following an outstanding performance in the classroom during the 2023 fall semester, Youngstown State's 509 student-athletes combined for an impressive 3.48 semester grade-point average, the Athletics Department announced on Thursday.

In the fall, 429 student-athletes had a semester GPA above 3.00 (84 percent) while 144 student-athletes (28 percent) posted a perfect 4.00 grade-point average. Nearly half of those student-athletes (80) have maintained a cumulative GPA of 4.00 upon the conclusion of the fall semester.

As a collective group, the Penguins own an outstanding 3.447 cumulative GPA for their Youngstown State academic careers. A total of 432 student-athletes have a cumulative grade-point average above 3.00 (85 percent).

Following the semester, all of YSU's programs own a cumulative GPA of at least 3.21. The Women's Golf program leads the way with a 3.94 GPA. Of note, 13 programs have a cumulative 3.44 GPA or higher.

In the fall, 13 programs boasted a GPA of 3.45 or above. The women's golf team posted the best semester GPA at an impressive 3.960 while Women's Tennis was just behind at 3.939. Women's Basketball registered a 3.769 GPA while the softball program posted a 3.742 GPA.

Men's swimming and diving owns the highest cumulative GPA of the men's programs at 3.63 and had the top semester GPA of 3.63. Men's golf had the second-best semester GPA at 3.62 while Baseball was third at 3.54.

All of YSU's women's sports had 3.44 GPAs or above in the fall as bowling, tennis, basketball, golf, volleyball, lacrosse, softball, swimming and diving and soccer all had impressive showings.

The 121-member football program had a 3.311 GPA during the fall while also advancing to the FCS playoffs for the first time in seven years. The football team had 88 student-athletes earn a GPA of 3.00 or better in the fall while 23 members of the squad had a 4.00 GPA.
