YSU Student-Athletes Have Tremendous Academic Success in Fall

Following an outstanding performance in the classroom during the 2024 fall semester, Youngstown State's 477 student-athletes combined for an impressive 3.46 semester grade-point average, the Athletics Department announced as classes resume on campus this week.

In the fall, 374 student-athletes had a semester GPA above 3.00 (78 percent) while 118 student-athletes (25 percent) posted a perfect 4.00 grade-point average. More than half of those student-athletes (72) have maintained a cumulative GPA of 4.00 upon the conclusion of the fall semester.

As a collective group, the Penguins own an outstanding 3.49 cumulative GPA for their Youngstown State academic careers – the second-best total in department history. A total of 402 student-athletes have a cumulative grade-point average above 3.00 (84 percent).

Following the semester, all of YSU's programs own a cumulative GPA of at least 3.32. The Women's Golf program leads the way with a 3.92 GPA. Of note, 14 programs have a cumulative 3.41 GPA or higher.

In the fall, 13 programs boasted a GPA of 3.40 or above. The women's golf team posted the best semester GPA at an impressive 3.97 while Women's Tennis was just behind at 3.82. Women's Basketball registered a 3.79 GPA while the volleyball program posted a 3.67 GPA.

Men's tennis owns the highest cumulative GPA of the men's programs at 3.66 and had the top semester GPA of 3.71. Men's swimming and diving had the second-best semester GPA at 3.48 while Track and Field/XC was third at 3.40.

All of YSU's women's sports had 3.47 GPAs or above in the fall.

  • Football garnered the highest team cumulative GPA in school history.
  • Men's Cross Country produced its highest cumulative GPA in school history.
  • Men's Track and Field had its highest cumulative GPA in school history.
  • Softball tied its highest cumulative GPA in school history.
  • Volleyball had its highest cumulative GPA in school history.
  • Women's tennis had its highest cumulative GPA in school history.
  • Women's Track and Field tied its highest cumulative GPA in school history.
