Youngstown, Ohio — Senior Tye Hunt shattered his own school record in the long jump to highlight the Youngstown State track and field team's strong performances at the season-opening YSU Icebreaker. The meet presented by Southwoods Health was contested at the Watson and Tressel Training Site on campus on Friday.
Hunt leaped 8.08 meters on his second attempt, which set records for the program, the facility and the meet. He topped his previous record of 7.74 meters, which he set at last season's Icebreaker event. The mark of 8.08 meters would have placed sixth at the NCAA Indoor Championship last season, and it gives him an early benchmark that should allow him to qualify for the national event in March in Boston.
Fellow jumper Jakari Lomax also set a school record in the triple jump with a distance of 15.52 meters. The fifth-year senior posted it on his third attempt to break the previous school and meet record of 15.40 meters from the 2022 YSU Icebreaker.
Hunt and Lomax were two of 11 Penguins who captured individual victories at the season-opening competition.
