Penguins Fall in Four to Cleveland State

The Youngstown State volleyball team battled Cleveland State on Friday evening but fell in four sets, 25-21, 25-22, 15-25, 25-20, at Beeghly Center.

The Penguins out-hit the Vikings .148-.130 while also having four more blocks and two more digs, and Cleveland State had just four more kills but was able to claw its way to the four-set win.

Gabriela Machin led Youngstown State with 10 kills and five blocks, and Elise Moeller had nine kills in her return from an injury that kept her sidelined since Sept. 2. Abbie Householder had a match-high 24 digs, and Josi Borum finished with 20 assists, 10 digs and eight kills.

Laken Voss had 12 kills to lead Cleveland State.

Machin and Julia Sell had three blocks during a 7-0 run in the opening set that gave YSU a 7-2 lead, and the Penguins held a 14-9 advantage later in the set. Cleveland State went on an 11-2 burst to go up 20-16, and YSU was able to tie the score at 20 and 21 before CSU prevailed 25-21.

Cleveland State held a 7-2 lead in the second set, and the Vikings never trailed as it won 25-22 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Youngstown State responded by cruising to a 25-15 win in the third set to extend the match. The Penguins held the Vikings to a .031 attack percentage, and Householder had three aces during an 8-2 run to start the set. After that initial run, Cleveland State got no closer than three the rest of the set.

The Penguins scored five straight points in the fourth set to tie the score at 12, and things were knotted again at 19-19 on an Isidora Sisic ace and at 20-20 on a Vikings' serving error. Liberty Torres had a kill for a sideout for Cleveland State to give it a 21-20 advantage, and the Vikings went on to score the final five points of the match.

Youngstown State will host Oakland on Saturday at 6 p.m. in another Horizon League match. Fans are reminded that parking may be restricted and subject to increased prices in some lots due to the YSU football game that kicks at 2 p.m.
