The Youngstown State volleyball team couldn't keep up with Oakland offensively and fell in straight sets to the Golden Grizzlies on Saturday evening at Beeghly Center. The set scores were 25-20, 25-19 25-15.
The Penguins had the match's individual leaders in kills, assists, digs and blocks, but Oakland had seven more kills collectively and outhit YSU .240 to .088.
Jazmin Vergara posted a match-high 11 kills, Josi Borum had a match-best 19 assists, Maria Insana led all players with 14 digs, and Julia Sell blocked a match-high five attacks for the Penguins.
Gentry Brown and Patti Cesarini both had nine kills and hit .300 and .304, respectively, for Oakland.
After an ace by Borum got the Penguins to within 19-18 in the opening set, Libby Gentile's kill sparked a 6-2 run for Oakland that ended with a 25-20 win. The Golden Grizzlies then scored seven of the final 10 points in the second set, and they closed out the third set with a 10-3 run.
Youngstown State will play three Horizon League road matches next week, starting with a contest at Northern Kentucky on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
