Cincinnati, Ohio - The Youngstown State men's tennis team picked up five singles wins in a strong 5-2 victory over Northern Kentucky on Saturday evening at the Five Seasons Sports Club.
The Penguins improve to 10-8 overall and remain unbeaten in Horizon League play at 5-0. The Norse drop to 6-7 overall and 1-4 in league play.
YSU found itself in a 1-0 deficit after dropping the doubles point. At No. 3, Nathan Favier and Will Everett earned a 6-1 win, but NKU picked up a 6-2 win at No. 1 and a 7-5 win at No. 2 to earn the point.
Three of the six singles contests went three sets with the Penguins winning two of the matches. YSU won in straight sets at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 singles.
At No. 1, Laurentiu Mandocescu earned a 7-5, 7-5 win over Emilien Burnel. At No. 4, Clement Mainguy cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 victory and at No. 5, Javi Pla won 6-4, 6-3. The Guins needed three sets for wins at No. 3 and No. 6 singles. At No. 3, Nathan Favier returned to the lineup and picked up a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win. At No. 6, David Alvarez Moreno won 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 for the Guins. NKU earned a 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (3) win at No. 2 singles for its lone singles win.
YSU returns to the court on Friday when it plays host to IUPUI at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center.
