The Youngstown State men's tennis team remained unbeaten in Horizon League play with a 5-2 victory over IUPUI on Friday afternoon at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center.
The Penguins improved to 11-8 overall and 6-0 in Horizon League play with the win over the Jaguars who drop to 6-17 and 2-4.
YSU came out strong in doubles winning at No. 1 and No. 2. At No. 1, Harry Fouzas and Laurentiu Mandocescu earned the first win for the Guins at 6-1. At No. 2, Will Everett and Nathan Favier clinched the point with a 6-2 win. The Guins had a 5-4 advantage at No. 3 singles as well.
In singles play, the Guins won the first four completed matches. YSU won in straight sets at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6.
The first to clinch was as David Alvarez Moreno at No. 6 singles. Moreno beat Noah Viste 6-3, 6-3 to remain unbeaten in Horizon League play and improve to 9-0 this spring. At No. 1, Mandocescu gave the Penguins another win with a 6-0, 6-2 over Alex Jochim. Jochim had defeated Mandocescu earlier this season. The Penguins clinched the victory with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 by Clement Mainguy.
The remaining three contests were determined in the 10-point super tiebreaker. Favier won his third set 10-4 at No. 4 after splitting the first two sets. IUPUI earned tiebreaker wins of 10-7 at No. 2 and 10-5 at No. 5 for its two match victories.
The Guins play their final home match of the season tomorrow against UIC. First serve is set for 11 a.m.
