Saibene Ties RBI Record, Buffenbarger Gets 700th K in Sweep of Green Bay

Senior Nikki Saibene tied the school record for career runs batted in and classmate Elle Buffenbarger became the first pitcher in school history to record 700 career strikeouts as the YSU softball team swept the season series with a pair of wins over Green Bay on Saturday afternoon at the YSU Softball Field.
The Penguins, who have won four straight, improve to 26-20 overall and 11-7 in Horizon League play after knocking off the Phoenix, 5-2, and 1-0. The Phoenix fall to 16-19 overall and 8-7 in league play.
In the opener, the Penguins jumped out to a 3-0 lead after posting a three-run third inning. Hailey Roach's two out single put runners at first and second and Saibene drilled a double down the left field line to knock in her record-tying RBI and gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead.
Avrey Schumacher's hard-hit infield single plated Roach and Saibene scored from third on a double steal.
The Phoenix cut the Penguins lead to one with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth.
Buffenbarger entered the game in the top of sixth and struck out the side. The offense responded YSU with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 5-2 lead. Hailey Niederkohr's run-scoring ground out gave the Penguins a 4-2 lead and Milena Lacatena's two-out single to left field scored pinch-runner Sydney Payne with the Penguins' fifth run.
Buffenbarger ended the game with her 700th career strikeout and picked up her first save of the season.
In the nightcap, Buffenbarger fired a seven-hit, complete-game shutout with eight strikeouts to record her second shutout of the season.
Bree Kohler's one-out triple to left-center field put a runner in scoring position and Yazmine Romero's two out single through the left side scored Kohler with the game's only run.
Buffenbarger retired nine of the last 11 batters for her 17th win of the season.
The Penguins visit Oakland for a doubleheader, Tuesday, April 26. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
