Saibene's Walk Off Leads Softball to 9-8 Win Over Green Bay

Senior Nikki Saibene's single down the right-field line in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the Penguins to a 9-8 win over Green Bay in a crucial Horizon League game on Friday at the Covelli Sports Complex.
The Penguins improve to 24-20 overall and 9-7 in Horizon League play while the Phoenix fall to 16-17 overall and 8-5 in league play.
Saibene went 4-for-5 with two runs scored while senior Yazmine Romero, junior Megan Turner and sophomore Hailey Niederkohr each had two hits. Junior Avrey Schumacher drove in three runs.
Senior Elle Buffenbarger earned her 16th win of the season and fanned 11 batters.
After the Phoenix tied the game at 8-8 with three runs in top of the seventh, Turner led off the bottom half of the frame with a hard-hit single to shortstop. Conchetta Rinaldi reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt, and Turner and pinch-runner Cassandra Carlson advanced to third and second on Hailey Roach's sacrifice bunt.
Saibene lined a 1-2 pitch down the right-field line plating Turner with the game-winning run.
Green Bay tied the game at 5-5 with two runs in the top of the sixth, but the Penguins answered with three in the bottom of the frame. Roach reached on an error to lead off the frame, and after a single by Saibene, Schumacher doubled down the right-field line that plated Roach and Saibene scored on a throwing error. Bree Kohler's sacrifice fly to center field plated Schumacher gave the Penguins an 8-5 lead.
The Penguins jumped out to a 4-0 lead after scoring twice in the bottom of the second and twice in the bottom of the third innings. The Phoenix got on the board after a solo home run by Alicia Peters in the top of the fourth.
The Penguins answered with a run in the bottom half on Schumacher' first sacrifice fly.
Green Bay scored twice in the fifth and twice in the sixth to knot the game at 5-5.
Youngstown State and Green Bay conclude the series with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
