Women's Lacrosse Bests Detroit Mercy in OT, Secures Conference Tournament Berth

BIRMINGHAM, Mich. – The Youngstown State women's lacrosse program clinched its spot in the inaugural 2022 Mid-American Conference tournament with its overtime victory over Detroit Mercy on Saturday afternoon at Seaholm High School, 10-9.
First-year Penguin Natalie Calandra-Ryan found the back of the net at the 4:31 mark of the first overtime period off a successful free-position attempt to clinch the victory for YSU.
With the win, the Penguins improve to 7-7 overall and 5-2 in the MAC, while the Titans drop to 1-12 on the year, including a 1-7 record in conference play.
Ali Korin led all scorers with her three-goal third quarter performance, while also tabbing a game-high mark for points (3) across five shots-on-goal.
Calandra-Ryan and Erin Clark also logged multi-goal outings for the Penguins, each adding a pair of goals apiece in a combined eight shots-on-goal. Adding to her performance, Clark picked-up a game-high four ground balls.
Savannah Clarke finished-off an impressive outing in the cage for the Penguins, completing a full 60-minute outing. The fifth-year senior totaled a game-high 16 saves across 25 Detroit Mercy shots-on-goal for an astounding .640 save percentage.
Cat Kopchia, Charlotte Dale and Leah Bodnar led the Titans offensive effort, each scoring two goals and combining to score six of Detroit Mercy's nine goals for the game.
After a slow start of three first-half goals and trailing 7-3 heading into the halftime locker room, the Penguins emerged from the break with a comeback mentality.
YSU went on a 5-0 scoring run in the third quarter, fueled by a hat trick of goals from Korin and lone scores from Tristen Chang and Lauren Ottensmeyer.
With an 8-7 advantaged entering the final quarter of play, the Penguins and Titans stalemated at the eight and nine-goal marks on the scoreboard. In the final seconds of regulation, first-year Penguin Molly Sheridan fired a shot at the Detroit Mercy goal, but couldn't capitalize.
In the overtime period, Calandra-Ryan was able to secure the draw control for the Penguins, work the ball deep into Titans' territory and was eventually sent to the 8-meter arch to win the game with a successfull free-position shot.

The Penguins head to the CMU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex in Mount Pleasant, Mich., to take-on Central Michigan in a 12 p.m. first draw on Monday, April 18.
Monday's contest against the Chippewas is a rescheduled game that was originally slated for Wednesday, February 23.
