Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla. - Bryan Kordupel and Ken Keller finished in the top 10 to lead the Youngstown State men's golf team to a fifth-place finish at the season-opening Orlando Invitational hosted by Oakland and Cleveland State at Mission Inn Resort's El Campeon Course which concluded on Tuesday.
Kordupel, who was tied for the lead following the first two round of play, finished tied for eighth with a three-round total of 217 while Keller was two shots back with a 219 to place 10th. Kordupel and Keller each earned their second top-10 finish of the 2021-22 season.
In the team race, YSU fired a three-round score of 889 (297-291-301) to finish fifth, just six strokes back of Oakland. Wright State won the tournament with an impressive five-under par total of 859. Purdue Fort Wayne was third with an 811. The Guins finished ahead of Cleveland State, IUPUI, Northern Kentucky Green Bay and Detroit Mercy in the highly Horizon League affair.
Kordupel had an impressive day on Monday with a pair of under-par rounds. His first-round one-under par 71 featured biridies on No. 1, No. 4, No. 10 and No. 11. In his two-under par second round, he had birdies on No. 1, No. 13, No. 17 and No. 18. On his final 12 holes he was three-under par. Highlighting his round on Tuesday was a birdie on No. 6.
Keller sandwiched a two-under par 70 in between rounds of 74 and 75. His first round featured birdies at No. 4 and No. 16 and his final round saw birdies at No. 1 and No. 10. Keller closed out the tournament one-under par on his last 10 holes. In his second round, he had four birdies and just two bogeys. Keller birdied No. 1, No. 8, No. 9 and 14. He was three-under his final 11 holes.
Kevin Scherr finished 27th with a three-round total of 225 (74-76-74). Scherr birdied the first hole in each of his three rounds. During his second round he had a high of three birdies.
Rounding out the team finishers for YSU was Zack Ford and Cole Christman who tied for 61st with a 236. Playing as an individual, Dean Austalosh finished 74th with a three-round 244.
Youngstown State competed on the same course where the Horizon League Championships will be held on April 24-26.
The Penguins are next in action later this week when they tackle the Sea Palms Collegiate hosted by Western Carolina in St. Simons Island, Ga.
