Indianapolis, Ind – Four players scored in double figures as the Youngstown State men's basketball team picked up its third straight victory with a 61-55 win over IUPUI on Thursday night at Indiana Farmers Coliseum.
The Penguins (13-10, 7-6 Horizon League) were led by Dwayne Cohill with 14 points while Myles Hunter scored 12 points. Senior Michael Akuchie recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds and sophomore Shemar Rathan-Mayes also had 11 points.
IUPUI (2-18, 0-9 Horizon League) was led by B.J. Maxwell with 22 points.
The Penguins were outshot and outrebounded by the Jaguars, but went 16-for-20 from the free-throw line. Youngstown State shot just 40.8 percent from the floor while the Jaguars connected on 46 percent, and IUPUI won the rebounding battle, 34-29.
Youngstown State twice led by as many as 12 in the first half and owned a 28-16 lead with 4:17 left in the first half.
The Jaguars scored the final 11 points of the stanza to cut the deficit to 28-27 at the intermission, and scored seven of the first nine points of the second half to take a 34-30 lead with 16:41 remaining.
The Penguins scored the next seven capped by a 3-pointer by Rathan-Mayes for a 37-34 lead, which they would never relinquish.
YSU expanded its run to 14-5 to take a 44-39 lead with 9:27 to go.
A basket by Maxwell got the Jaguars within one 44-43, at the 8:08 mark, but a driving layup by Daniel Ogoro and dunk by Akuchie pushed the YSU lead back to five, 48-43, with 6:01 to go.
IUPUI sliced the lead down to three but the Penguins made nine of their final 12 free throws to seal the victory.
Youngstown State visits UIC, Saturday, Feb. 5. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. ET at Credit Union 1 Arena in Chicago, Ill.
