Penguins Fall to Wright State, 84-71

Dayton, Ohio -- Four players scored in double figures but the Youngstown State men's basketball team dropped an 84-71 decision to Wright State on Thursday night at the Nutter Center.

Sophomore Shemar Rathan-Mayes scored a team-high 20 points while senior Tevin Olison had 19 points to lead the Penguins. Senior Michael Akuchie and junior Dwayne Cohill each had 12 points.

Olison connected on 4-of-8 from 3-point range and shot 7-for-13 from the floor while Rathan-Mayes made three 3-pointers and went 5-for-5 from the free-throw line.

Leading the Raiders was Grant Basile with 29 points while Tanner Holden had 26 points and 10 rebounds.

The Penguins fall to 18-12 overall and 12-8 in the Horizon League with the Raiders improve to 17-13 overall and 14-7 in league play.

The Raiders, who led the entire game, shot 54 percent from the field for the game while the Penguins connected on 43.9 percent from the floor.

Wright State scored nine of the first 11 points of the game and jumped out to a 15-6 lead just five minutes into the contest. 

Youngstown State cut the deficit down to four on multple occasions, including 24-20 at the 8:04 mark after an Akuchie dunk. Wright State scored the next five points to extend the lead to nine, but Akuchie made two straight baskets to get back within five, 29-24, with 5:37 remaining.

Wright State used a 13-4 run to push its lead to 14, 42-28, and led 44-33 at the intermission.

Youngstown State scored the first five points of the second half to cut the WSU lead to six, 44-38, but the Raiders used a 10-1 run to boost their lead to 15 points, 54-39, with 16:25 remaining.

Wright State led by as many as 17, 73-56, 8:13 remaining but the Penguins were able to trim the lead down to nine, 77-68, at the 5:14 mark. During the Penguins' 12-4 run, Olison hit a pair of 3-pointers and Rathan-Mayes hit a third to spark the run.

Youngstown State, though, would not get any closer.

The Penguins close out the regular season against Northern Kentucky, Saturday, Feb. 26. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at BB&T Arena.
