Boiling Springs, N.C. -- Junior Conchetta Rinaldi went 3-for-3 with two runs batted in to lead the Youngstown State softball team to an 8-1 victory over Gardner-Webb on Sunday morning at Brinkley Softball Stadium.

The Penguins improve to 2-3 on the season.

Freshman Bree Kohler went 2-for-3 with two runs scored while senior Grace Cea and junior Megan Turner each hit two-run home runs. Cea drove in three runs on the day.

Senior Elle Buffenbarger (2-1) picked up her second win of the season firing 5.1 innings and fanning nine batters.

The Penguins broke open the game with a five-run sixth inning that 10 batters go to the plate. Kolher singled with one and scored on a two-out double by Rinaldi. Cea blasted her first home run of the season to put the Penguins up 5-1. Two batters later Turner hit her first homer of the season after a single by Avrey Schumacher, which gave the Penguins a 7-1 advantage.

In top of the seventh, freshman Taylor Truran doubled home Hailey Niederkohr with the Penguins' final run.

Youngstown State takes on Winthrop and Western Carolina, Friday, Feb. 18, at 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. in Rock Hill, S.C.
