Men's Basketball Falls to Robert Morris, 73-68

The Youngstown State men's basketball team dropped a 73-68 decision to Robert Morris on Sunday afternoon at the Beeghly Center.

YSU drops 16-11 overall and 10-7 in Horizon League play, while Robert Morris improves to 7-19 and 5-12.

Dwayne Cohill scored a team-high 18 points for YSU, while Myles Hunter added a season-high 14. The two combined for three of the team's eight made 3-pointers on the afternoon. Tevin Olison (12) and Michael Akuchie (11) also reached double figures, with Akuchie tallying a game-high 11 rebounds to complete the double-double.

Robert Morris had four players score in double figures led by Kahliel Spear's game-high 27 points. Matt Mayers also had 11 and added seven rebounds.

The Colonials began the contest shooting 4-of-5 (80 percent) from the floor and 2-of-3 (66.7 percent) from long range to find themselves up five through the first four minutes of the game.

With 15:26 remaining the opening half, Akuchie found Hunter in the corner for a 3-pointer to give YSU its first lead of the game 11-10. Hunter's basket sparked a 7-0 scoring run that stretched to the 12:36 point. The Penguins forced the Colonials into three empty possessions during the stretch and went from a two-point deficit to a five-point advantage.

Robert Morris would regain the first-half lead at the 8:50 mark following Kam Farris connecting from three, 18-17. On the ensuing Penguins possession, Akuchie buried a pull-up jumper near the foul line give the 19-18 lead back to YSU. The Colonials endured a near six-minute field goal draught that stretched to the 3:38 point, allowing YSU to build its biggest lead of the half at seven.

Robert Morris would claw their way back to within two at the 2:46 mark, but a made shots by Hunter on back-to-back possessions, followed by an Olison jumper would stretch the Penguin lead back eight with just 30 ticks in the half. YSU would take a five-point lead into the halftime locker room after a Penguin foul sent the Colonials to the charity stripe for three free throws with four seconds on the clock.

Out of the halftime break, a YSU turnover and a pair of missed free throws proved costly and allowed RMU to come to within one of the lead. Swinging some momentum back in the Penguins favor, Hunter would connected on his second 3-pointer at the 17:23 mark to give YSU the two-possession lead.

After a RMU layup, YSU led by at least a single possession for just over three minutes prior to RMU regaining the lead with 13:58 to play for the first time since the 15:26 point of the opening half.

Following a pair of stalemates at the 13:23 and 12:50 marks, the Penguins would retake a three-point advantage off the second of Olison's 3-pointers on consecutive offensive possessions. The bucket began an 8-0 scoring run for YSU to up its lead to 55-47 with just over 11 minutes remaining in regulation.

Akuchie's dunk at the 7:01 point upped the YSU advantage to double digits, but acted as the Penguins final made basket for a near five-minute stretch until Cohill's first of two consecutive made layups. During the span, YSU shot 0-of-5 from the floor and Robert Morris was able to erase the Penguins lead to take one of their own, 66-64, with 3:16 to play.

The Colonials scored the final five points of the contest while outscoring the Penguins 45-35 in the second half to seal the victory.

YSU shot 45.2 percent (28-of-62) from the field and made seven 3-pointers in the game at a 31.8 percent clip (7-of-22). YSU was also 5-of-6 from the free-throw line, for 83.3 percent. Robert Morris shot 53.1 percent (26-of-49) for the contest, including 7-of-11 from long range.

The Penguins are back in action for game four of the five-game mid-season homestand on Thursday, Feb. 17, taking on UIC at the Beeghly Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
