Youngstown State track and field athletes Dorian Chaigneau, Luke Laubacher and Jahniya Bowers were named Nike #HLTF Athletes of the Week following outstanding season-opening performances at the YSU Icebreaker last Friday.
In his YSU debut, Chaigneau crushed the pole vault record in earning an event win the YSU Icebreaker. Chaigneau, a two-time NCAA Division II Champion in the event, cleared a height of 5.35m, which broke the old record of 5.15m. Chiagneau was the NCAA Champion at the 2022 outdoor meet and 2021 indoor meet. His mark was the third-best in the country following the first week of competition.
Laubacher opened the season with a winning performance in the 60m hurdles at the YSU Icebreaker on. Laubacher posted a time of 7.94 seconds to take first in the 60m hurdles. His time was just 0.02 seconds off his personal-best in the event. He was also fourth in the long jump with leap of 7.08m. His mark was the seventh-fastest in the country following the first week of NCAA action.
Bowers set a meet record and took home a first-place finish in the 60m dash at the YSU Icebreaker. Bowers opened the season with an impressive time of 7.27Â seconds, which was just 0.02Â off her school mark. She won the race by 0.12 seconds. After the opening weekend of competition throughout the country, Bowers ranks No. 1 in the nation in the 60m dash.
The Penguins are next in action on Jan. 14 when they travel to Penn State for the Penn State Nittany Lion Challenge.
