Ohio's Dwight Wilson had a shot bounce off the rim five times before falling in at the final horn to give the Bobcats an 81-79 victory over the Youngstown State men's basketball team on Sunday at Beeghly Center.
Wilson's game-winner came after Dwayne Cohill hit a long 3-pointer with 1.9 seconds left to tie the score at 79. The Penguins had trailed by as many as 16 early in the second half, but they made eight 3s in the final 19 minutes to erase the deficit.
Ohio improved to 5-4 with the victory, and the Penguins dropped to 7-4.
Brandon Rush scored a game-high 26 points and made six 3-pointers to help the Penguins rally, Malek Green and Cohill each finished with 16, and Bryce McBride added 10. Green contributed 10 rebounds to register a double-double, and Cohill registered a career-high nine assists.
Ohio led 79-76 when AJ Brown two free throws with 17 seconds left, and Rush missed a 3-pointer on YSU's next possession. With two fouls to give, the Penguins tried for a steal and fouled three times quickly to send AJ Clayton to the line with 7.4 seconds remaining. Clayton missed his first attempt, and Green grabbed the rebound and passed to Cohill. Cohill dribbled to the right wing and hit a long 3 with 1.9 seconds left to tied the score.
Ohio's inbounds pass was deflected out of bounds at midcourt with 1.4 seconds remaining, and the Bobcats got time to draw up a play in the huddle as the officials went to the replay monitor to check the time. On the game-winner, Wilson started being guarded by 6-foot-8 Adrian Nelson at the near elbow, and the 6-foot-3 Rush switched to him on a screen at the near block. Ben Roderick found him, and Brown threw up a shot that was partially blocked but found its way down after hanging on the rim.
Brown finished with 16 points off the bench, and Jaylin Hunter led the Bobcats with 17. Wilson and Clayton both had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Ohio scored the first eight points of the game and led for 26-and-a-half consecutive minutes before the Penguins rallied. The Bobcats went on a 13-3 run in the first half to take a 30-18 lead with 6:37 left in the opening half, and they held a 44-31 advantage at halftime.
Rush and Green were 8-for-14 combined in the first 20 minutes, but the rest of the Penguins were 3-for-22. Ohio shot 57.6% while YSU was held to 30.6%.
DeVon Baker hit a 3-pointer on Ohio's first possession of the second half to give the Bobcats their largest lead of the afternoon at 47-31. Shemar Rathan-Mayes hit a 3-pointer at the 18:13 mark, and Rush hit another 32 seconds later as the Penguins quickly cut the deficit down to 10.
McBride had a four-point play with 14:09 on the clock that got the Penguins to within 52-48, and the Penguins tied the score at 54 with 12:38 on the clock, and YSU took its first lead of the afternoon on a McBride basket 26 seconds later.
The margin stayed within a possession until back-to-back YSU turnovers led to consecutive 3s by the Bobcats that gave them a 67-62 lead. The Penguins trailed until Green's layup gave them a 73-72 advantage, and YSU's final lead was 76-75 when Nelson split two free throws with 1:51 left. Wilson had a putback with 43.1 seconds left that gave Ohio a 77-76 lead to set up the final sequence.
Youngstown State shot 50% from the field in the second half, and it was 8-for-13 from beyond the arc in the final 20 minutes. The Penguins shot 39.7% or the game, and Ohio shot 53.2%. YSU made two more 3s than the Bobcats and held a 14-6 edge at the free-throw line.
Youngstown State closes its homestand when it entertains Southern University, Friday, Dec. 16. Tipoff is set for 8Â p.m. at Beeghly Center and is the back half of a doubleheader with the YSU women's basketball team.
