Milwaukee, Wis. -- The fifth-seeded Youngstown State women's soccer team advanced to the Horizon League Championship game for the first time in program history after knocking off No. 2 Purdue Fort Wayne, 1-0 in the semifinals on Thursday afternoon at Engelmann Stadium.
The Penguins improve to 9-7-3 overall and have won four straight and seven of the last eight games. Purdue Fort Wayne's season ends with an overall mark of 9-4-6.
After a scoreless first half, senior Abriana Rondin stole the ball just outside the Mastodons' 18, juked a defender and perfectly placed a left-footer into the bottom right corner to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead on the 51st minute.
Rondin and Regan LaVigna each had three shots to lead the Penguins, but the Mastodons outshot Youngstown State, 14-12.
Junior goalkeeper Brooklynn Kirkpatrick recorded her eighth shutout and ninth victory of the season and tallied eight saves.
Youngstown State takes on No. 1 seed Milwaukee in the championship game, Saturday, Nov. 5. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. Eastern.
