Game 1 Recap

Collin Floyd tossed his fourth complete game of the season and Jeff Wehler accounted for both of the Penguins' runs as the Youngstown State baseball team defeated Milwaukee 2-1 in game one of a doubleheader on Friday at Franklin Field.

Floyd allowed one run on five hits and matched his career high with 12 strikeouts over seven innings to earn his fifth victory of the season. The senior recorded a strikeout in six different innings, and he had multiple punch outs in five different frames. Floyd retired the Panthers in order in the first, fifth and seventh innings, and he struck out the side in the third. He did not allow a walk as he threw 75 of his 89 pitches for strikes.

Floyd, who set the YSU career record for strikeouts last weekend, became the program's all-time leader in games started on Friday with the 50th start of his career. The Akron, Ohio, native surpassed Blake Aquadro's previous mark of 49, which had stood since 2013.

Wehler scored both of YSU's runs in the contest as he went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and a stolen base. Phillip Glasser went 2-for-4 with an RBI as the Penguins outhit the Panthers 7-5.

The Penguins struck first with a run in the top of the first inning. Wehler led off the game with a double down the right field line, stole third and scored on a groundout by Glasser to give YSU an early 1-0 lead. YSU added to its lead in the top of the fifth when Wehler led off the inning with a solo home run to straightaway center field.

Milwaukee cut YSU's lead in half at 2-1 with one run on two hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. Luke Seidel hit a leadoff single and came around to score on a two-out RBI single from Mitchell Buban.

The Penguins missed multiple chances to open up their lead as they left seven runners on base. In the top of the second inning, Turner Grau drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a single from Dominick Bucko. However, Grau was thrown out at the plate when Nick Caruso attempted to bunt him home.

In the top of the third inning, Glasser hit a one-out single and advanced to third on a single by Padraig O'Shaughnessy. However, Steven D'Eusanio grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning. The Penguins also left two runners aboard in the fifth and seventh frames.
