Box Score Phillip Glasser hit his first home run of the season to extend his hitting streak to 10 games as the Youngstown State baseball team fell 12-2 to Wright State in the series opener on Friday at Nischwitz Stadium.
Wright State won its fifth straight game to improve to 5-5 overall and 5-0 in Horizon League play while Youngstown State dropped to 5-8 overall and 3-2 in Horizon League action.
Dominick Bucko recorded a pair of singles and scored a run for the Penguins while Jeff Wehler collected an RBI single.
Wright State starter Jake Schrand earned the victory after allowing one run on four hits and striking out seven over six innings. YSU starter Colin Clark suffered the loss after surrendering eight runs, five of them earned, on 11 hits over four innings.
The Raiders jumped ahead early with four runs on three hits and two errors in the bottom of the first inning. Damon Dues led off with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error before Quincy Hamilton reached on a fielding error. Tyler Black followed with a three-run home run to right field that put Wright State in front 3-0. Alec Sayre added a two-out solo home run later in the inning to push the Raiders' lead to 4-0.
Wright State increased its advantage to 7-0 with three runs on three hits in the home half of the second inning. Alex Alders drew a leadoff walk and Konner Piotto followed with a single to right field. Hamilton then delivered an RBI single to center that plated Alders, and Zane Harris hit a two-out, two-run double to left center.
The Penguins plated their first run in the top of the third inning when Bucko hit a leadoff single and came around to score on an RBI single off the bat of Wehler.
The Raiders answered with a run of their own in the home half of the third. Gehrig Anglin hit a one-out double down the left field line and was brought home when Dues doubled to right center. Wright State added to its lead with two runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth. Black hit his second home run of the game, this one a solo shot, with two outs before Harris doubled to right center. Sammy Sass followed with a double down the right field line that scored Harris to push Wright State's edge to 10-1.
YSU scored its second and final run in the top of the top of the eighth inning when Glasser hit a solo home run to right field that extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
The Raiders capped the scoring with two runs on two hits in the home half of the eighth. Justin McConnell drove home a run with a sacrifice fly and Cameron Rountree hit a two-out RBI single.
Wright State outhit YSU 19-7 as 10 different Raiders recorded at least one hit in the contest. Dues, Black and Harris each had three hits while Black drove in a game-high four runs.
Jay Luikart, Brock Nartker and Henry Von Hollen each worked an inning out of the bullpen for the Raiders with Nartker allowing one run in the eighth inning.
Andrew Russell was responsible for two runs on four hits over two innings of relief for YSU. Marco DeFalco worked a scoreless seventh inning in his first appearance of the season while Brandon Matthews allowed a pair of runs on two hits in the eighth.
The Penguins and Raiders will continue their four-game Horizon League series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon. Both games will be broadcast live on YSNLive.com.
