Moon Township, Pa. -- Senior Michael Akuchie set the Youngstown State Division I single-game rebounding record with 24 and posted his fifth double-double of the season with 11 points as the Penguins defeated Robert Morris in overtime, 70-66, at the UPMC Events Center on Saturday.
The Penguins improve to 10-10 overall and 6-10 in the Horizon League while the Colonials fall to 3-11 overall and 2-9 in the league.
Junior Darius Quisenberry led the Penguins with 21 points while seniors Naz Bohannon and Garrett Covington each had 15 points.
Leading the Colonials was AJ Bramah with 17 points and 16 rebounds while Trayden Williams added 16 points.
For the second consecutive night, the Colonials hit a basket at the end of regulation to force overtime. Robert Morris' Cameron Wilbon made a floating jump shot with 1.1 seconds remaining to tie the game at 58-58.
The Penguins, who led 58-56, missed three consectutive free throws leading up to Wilbon's game-tying shot.
In the extra frame, the Colonials twice led by two, 60-58 and 62-60, before the Penguins scored six straight points to go up 66-62 with 38 seconds left.
RMU cut got within two twice more but Quisenberry and Covington each made a pair of free throws to seal the win.
The Penguins, who led for 38:28, built an 11-point second half lead, 42-31, with 15:22 left in regulation.
Robert Morris went on an 11-2 run to get within two, 44-42, before the Penguins were able to extend the lead back to six, 50-44, on driving layup by Quisenberry.
The Colonials scored the next eight to take its first lead of the game, 52-50, after a 3-pointer by Jon Williams at the 4:15 mark.
In the first half, YSU scored the first six points of the game and led by nine 13-4 just six-and-half minutes into the game.
Robert Morris was able to trim the lead to three, 17-14, before a putback by Bohannon and a 3-pointer by Alex Vargo boosted the lead back to eight, 22-14, at the 8:29 mark
The Colonials got within one, 24-23, before a 10-4 run by YSU put the Penguins up 34-27 at the intermission. Sparking the YSU run was a basket by Quisenberry, a 3-pointer by Vargo and a jumper and 3-pointer by Quisenberry.
Youngstown State hosts Rochester (Mich.), Monday, Feb. 8. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. at the Beeghly Center.
