Penguins Shoot 60 Percent, Set Scoring Record in 102-60 Win Over Mastodons

Box Score

The Youngstown State women's basketball team set a new school record for points in a Horizon League game on its way to a 102-60 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne on Friday afternoon at Beeghly Center.

The Penguins scored the first 16 points of the game and led by double digits for the final 36:56. Youngstown State shot at least 56 percent in every quarter and 60 percent from the field for the game as it won for the seventh time in eight games.

Mary Dunn was 10-of-12 from the field and scored a game-high 23 points in 19 minutes, and she helped the Penguins hold a sizeable 50-14 scoring edge in the paint. McKenah Peters notched her first double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Nneka Obiazor (13), Malia Magestro (10) and Lexi Wagner (10) were also in double figures. Chelsea Olson had 11 assists to go along with seven points in 24 minutes.

It was Youngstown State's first game scoring more than 100 points since it beat Sacramento State 102-94 on Nov. 20, 2016, in Hawaii.

Aubrey Stupp led the Mastodons with 11 points.

Obiazor made the first of YSU's 13 3-pointers at the 7:34 mark of the first quarter to give the Penguins a quick 9-0 lead and force a Purdue Fort Wayne timeout. Magestro's layup with 4:19 remaining put YSU up 16-0, and the Mastodons' first points came on a putback by Stupp on the next possession.

YSU led 24-10 at the end of the first period, and a 10-1 run in the second period gave the Penguins their first 20-point advantage at 44-23 with 1:46 left. YSU's margin was 46-30 at halftime.

Dunn scored 10 of her points in the third period as the Penguins pulled away with a 31-9 edge in the quarter. The lead reached its peak at 102-56 on a Magestro 3-pointer with 1:11 remaining.

Youngstown State will try to complete the weekend sweep on Saturday as it hosts Purdue Fort Wayne at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on 570 WKBN and ESPN+.
