Box Score The Youngstown State baseball team scored three times in the first inning and got five strong innings from starter Jon Snyder to earn a 4-2 victory over Troy in the series finale on Sunday at Riddle-Pace Field.
Snyder allowed just one run on three hits and matched his career high with six strikeouts while walking only one batter over five solid innings to earn the win in his first start of the season. The Springboro, Ohio, native recorded at least one strikeout in each of the first four innings, and he retired seven straight batters at one point.
Four YSU relievers combined to limit the Trojans to one run on three hits over the final four frames. Gary Clift Jr. earned his first save of the season after working a scoreless ninth inning.
Youngstown State earned its first win of 2021 to improve to 1-3 while Troy falls to 3-1.
Padraig O'Shaughnessy led the Penguins offensively, going 2-for-3 with a solo home run and two runs scored. Phillip Glasser also had a pair of hits while Andre Good drove home two runs. Steven D'Eusanio added an RBI single, and Blaze Glenn and Turner Grau each had a base hit.
YSU pitchers held Troy to season lows of two runs and six hits as the Penguins outhit the Trojans 8-6.
The Penguins jumped out to an early lead with three runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. Glasser drew a leadoff walk and stole second before O'Shaughnessy reached on a one-out single to shortstop. D'Eusanio followed with an RBI single up the middle that plated Glasser for YSU's first run. Two batters later, Good delivered a two-out, two-run single through the right side that scored O'Shaughnessy and D'Eusanio.
Youngstown State pushed its lead to 4-0 in the top of the third inning when O'Shaughnessy hit a solo home run to right field, his first as a Penguin. Troy scored its first run of the contest in the bottom of the fifth inning on a solo home run from Easton Kirk. Both teams put their power on the display in the series as Troy belted 10 home runs and YSU hit five over the four-game set.
Troy shaved YSU's lead to 4-2 in the home half of the seventh inning with an RBI single by Nic Nolan. William Sullivan hit a leadoff single and reached second when Logan Cerny was hit by a pitch. Nolan then delivered his two-out RBI single up the middle to plate Sullivan.
The Trojans got the potential tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth as Clift Jr. allowed a leadoff single to Kyle Mock. However, Clift Jr. was able to strike out Cerny, get Kirk to pop out and Nolan to ground out to third to end the ballgame.
In his first appearance as a Penguin, Matt Brosky allowed one run on a solo homer over 1.1 innings. Joel Hake surrendered one hit over 0.2 scoreless innings while Dalton Earich worked a scoreless eighth inning to set up Clift Jr.'s save opportunity.
Troy starter DJ Wilkinson suffered the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits and walking three batters over six innings. Three Trojans relievers combined to limit the Penguins to just one hit and no runs over their final three at bats.
Youngstown State will return to action with four games in Louisiana on Feb. 26-28. The Penguins will play at Nicholls on Feb. 26 at 1:30 p.m. ET before traveling to face LSU that night at 8 p.m. YSU will take on LSU again on Feb. 27 at 3 p.m. before concluding the weekend at Nicholls on Feb. 28 at 2 p.m.
