Senior Naz Bohannon posted his 10th 20-point scoring performance with a team-high 23 points and led three others reaching double figures in a 77-70 win over IUPUI in the regular-season finale on Saturday at the Beeghly Center.
With the win, the Penguins improve to 14-11 overall and 9-11 in the Horizon League while the Jaguars fall to 8-9 overall and 7-9 in league play.
Junior Darius Quisenberry scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half and freshman Shemar Rathan-Mayes also recorded 14 points. Senior Garrett Covington added 11 points for the Penguins.
Leading the Jaguars was Marcus Burk with a game-high 24 points and Elyjah Goss with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Nathan McClure added 16 points for the Jaguars.
After shooting a blistering 58.6 percent (17-for-29) in the first half, the Penguins cooled off making just two of their first 10 field-goal attempts in the second half.
However, the Penguins were able to build a 12-point lead, 46-34, at the 16:49 mark because the Jaguars missed their first seven shots after halftime.
IUPUI went on a 13-4 run over the next seven minutes to cut the deficit to three, 50-47, with 9:37 remaining.
The Penguins rebuilt a 10-point lead three more times with the last one at 63-53 with 5:17 left after a Quisenberry jumper.
The Jaguars whittled the lead back down to four, 68-64, with 1:48 remaining. After two charity tosses by Quisenberry and dunk by Michael Akuchie, who had 11 rebounds, put YSU up by eight, 72-64, the Penguins five of their final six free throws to seal the victory.
The Penguins fell behind 14-7 early in the first half, but used a 12-2 run over a four minute span to take a 19-16 lead. After the Jaguars knotted the game at 19-19 with 11:28 left, Youngstown State scored 12 of the next 14 points to take a 10-point lead, 31-21, with 7:19 left.
A layup by Covington and steal and layup by Bohannon extended the Penguins advantage to 11, 37-26, with 5:09 remaining before halftime.
IUPUI outscored the Penguins, 8-4, to close out the half with the Penguins with a 41-34 lead at intermission.
The Penguins will participate in the 2021 Horizon League Men's Basketball Championship next week. Opponents, dates and times will be announced later tonight.
