Penguins Dominate Green Bay to Sweep Trip to Wisconsin

Green Bay, Wis. - The Youngstown State men's basketball used a dominant second-half to pick up an 82-58 victory over Green Bay on Saturday night at the Kress Center.

With the win, YSU improves to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the Horizon League while Green Bay falls to 2-6 and 1-1.

Leading the way offensively was Tevin Olison who had 20 points while Michael Akuchie had 17 (all in the first half) while Shemar Rathan-Mayes and Dwayne Cohill each contributed 15. Cohill led the Guins with seven rebounds 

The Penguins took control of the game late in the first half. YSU led 32-30 with 2:42 left in the first half before closing the half on an 8-1 run. Rathan-Mayes started the spurt with a bucket while Akuchie had back-to-back hoops and Cohill had a putback of his own miss to give the Guins a 40-31 halftime lead.

YSU turned up the heat to open the second half going on an 11-0 run in the first 4:10. Following a pair of free throws by Cohill, Olison drilled a 3-pointer to push the lead to 45-31 in the first minute of the period. Rathan-Mayes made a pair of free throws and Myles Hunter knocked down a jumper to push the advantage to 18. Olison's putback gave the Penguins a 51-31 lead at the 15:50 mark of the half.

Green Bay stopped the Guins momentarily but Olison drained a 3-pointer, Luke Chicone added his first career 3-pointer and then Olison again drained a triple to boost the lead to 60-33 with 12:23 left in the game. From that point on, the deficit was never below 21 points.

The 24-point margin of victory was the most by the Penguins at Green Bay with the previous high being four set back in HL Tournament in 2006.

In the second half, YSU made eight of its nine 3-pointers in the contest and shot 62.5 percent making 15-of-24 attempts. For the game, the Penguins shot 53.6 percent making 30-of-56 attempts. Green Bay shot 41.3 percent for the game.

The Guins were a perfect 13-of-13 from the free-throw line and won the battle of the boards 31-19. Akuchie was 5-of-5 while Rathan-Mayes was 4-of-4 from the line. YSU's starting lineup was 25-of-48 for the game from the field (52 percent). 

The Penguins open a three-game homestand on Wednesday when they take on Central Michigan. Tipoff at Beeghly Center is set for 7 p.m.
