Football Comes Up Short Against No.10 South Dakota State

The Youngstown State football team came up short against No. 10 South Dakota State with a 47-16 loss on Saturday at Stambaugh Stadium.

When Joe Craycraft suffered an injury late in the third quarter, third-string quarterback Mitch Davidson took over the Penguins offense and scored the two Penguin touchdowns of the game. Craycraft started in place of Demeatric Crenshaw.

The Penguins had 223 total offensive yards with 147 of them coming in the air. Davidson passed for 111 yards including his two touchdown passes and completed six of his seven pass attempts. Wide receiver Bryce Oliver had 111 receiving yards on three catches with two touchdowns.

Defensive back Jordan White completed nine tackles and recovered a fumble. Dylan Wudke and Amarian Robinson each picked up a sack, and Quincy Lenton had six tackles and an interception.

SDSU's quarterback Chris Oladokun passed for 260 yards and one touchdown, and Pierre Strong ran for 163 yards and two touchdowns.

South Dakota State scored a touchdown on the opening possession with a 25-yard catch by tight end Zach Heins from Oladokun, taking a 7-0 lead.

SDSU followed up with another touchdown on its next possession when Strong received the snap and ran it in for a five-yard touchdown to increase the lead to 14-0. YSU answered with a 28-yard field goal by kicker Colt McFadden, making the score 14-3 with 2:13 to go in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Penguins' defense kept the Jackrabbits out of the endzone with several strong defensive plays. First, defensive back Tyjon Jones forced a fumble in the red zone and White recovered it in the endzone. On the next South Dakota State drive, Lenton intercepted Oladokun in the endzone with 2:32 left in the half.

On SDSU's next possession, Wudke and Robinson each sacked Oladokun to hold the Jackrabbits to a 52-yard field goal by kicker Cole Frahm to close out the half.

Craycraft threw an interception to start the second half, and SDSU scored on the first play of its drive with a 35-yard rushing touchdown by Strong to make the score 24-3 with 13:36 left in the third quarter.

After SDSU scored another touchdown, YSU answered when Davidson took the reins and completed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Oliver, making the score 31-9 at the end of the third quarter.

Later in the fourth quarter, Davidson connected again with Oliver for a 31-yard touchdown leading to the final score of 47-16.

Youngstown State is back in action Saturday when they travel to play North Dakota inside the Alerus Center. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. Eastern.
