Penguins Drop Contest at UNI

Cedar Falls, Iowa - The Youngstown State football team suffered a 34-7 loss to 13th-ranked UNI on Saturday afternoon at the UNI-Dome.

The Penguins drop to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference while UNI improves to 3-1 and 1-0. 

UNI took a 10-0 lead after the first quarter. On its second possession of the game, Theo Day found Vance McShane in the seam on a 48-yard scoring toss. On its next drive, the YSU defense stiffened and forced a UNI field-goal attempt. Matthew Cook converted from 44 yards out giving UNI a 10-0 lead with 6:59 left in the quarter.

Late in the period, YSU had a chance to get on the scoreboard. Colt McFadden attempted a career-long 55-yard field goal and had plenty of distance, but the kick faded left.

In the second quarter, the Penguins had a drive stopped at the UNI 42-yard line on an incomplete pass on a 4th-and-2 play. On the next snap, UNI's Dom Williams raced around the left side of the defense scoring on a 58-yard run to push the lead up to 17-0 with 9:41 left in the second quarter. Later in the period, Bradrick Shaw scored on a 30-yard run making the score 24-0. The lead moved out to 31-0 when Day connected with Isaiah Weston on a 24-yard scoring toss.

In the first half, UNI had 173 yards rushing and 147 yards passing while YSU had 78 through the air and 47 on the ground. 

Cook kicked another 44-yard field goal with 9:43 remaining in the third quarter to create a 34-0 UNI advantage.

In the fourth quarter, the Penguins showed moxie on a 13-play, 78-yard drive that ended with a Demeatric Crenshaw to Jorge Portorreal 14-yard touchdown toss with 2:32 remaining.

For the game, UNI had 388 total offensive yards while YSU finished with 250. Crenshaw was 25-of-37 for 198 yards, two interceptions and a touchdown.

Defensively, Grant Dixon had six tackles and his second career interception. Zaire Jones also finished with six stops for the Penguins.

The Penguins return home next Saturday for a Homecoming contest against Missouri State. Kickoff at Stambaugh Stadium is set for 2 p.m.
