Junior Danae Rugola tied for 15th to pace the Youngstown State women's golf team at the Dayton Flyer Invitational, which concluded on Tuesday at NCR Country Club in Kettering, Ohio.
As a team, the Penguins placed 10th with a two-round team total of 626. YSU posted a 317 in the opening round on Monday before concluding the event with a 309 in the final session on Tuesday. UIndy recorded a two-round 589 to win the tournament title by nine strokes over runner-up Butler. Cleveland State placed third with a 607 while Purdue Fort Wayne (612) and Detroit Mercy (616) rounded out the top five.
Rugola finished with a two-round score of 151 (76-75) to earn her third top-15 finish in four events this fall. She has now been YSU's top finisher in each of the team's four events this season. The junior's first-round 76 featured 11 pars and a birdie on the par-four No. 1. During the second and final session, the Uniontown, Pa. native recorded 11 pars and a birdie on the par-three No. 11. Rugola made par or better on 10 of her final 13 holes during the final round.
Christina Lewis finished tied for 31st with a two-round 155 (77-78). The junior's first-round 77 featured 13 pars as she fired a two-over-par 37 on the front nine. Lewis' final-round 78 included 10 pars and a birdie on the par-four No. 7. Madie Smithco placed 43rd with a two-round total of 158 (80-78). The sophomore's first-round 80 featured six pars and two birdies while her second-round 78 included nine pars and a birdie on the par-four No. 7.
Tori Utrup concluded the tournament with a two-round 162 (84-78) to finish tied for 53rd. The senior's opening-round 84 featured eight pars while her second-round 78 included 10 pars and a birdie on the par-five No. 12. Lizzie Saur finished 64th with a two-round score of 165 (84-81). The freshman's first-round 84 featured seven pars and a birdie on the par-three No. 3 while her second-round 81 included nine pars and a birdie on the par-four No. 1. Saur fired a one-over-par 36 on the front nine during the final session.
Playing as an individual, Britney Jonda placed 72nd with a two-round 178 (88-90). The senior's first-round 88 featured four pars and a birdie on the par-three No. 3 while her second-round 90 included five pars.
Ohio State's Alexis Phadungmartvorakul earned medalist honors at one under par with a two-round 139 (67-72) while UIndy's Anna Kramer placed second with a 143 (70-73).
Youngstown State will conclude its fall season on Oct. 25-26 with the Palmetto Intercollegiate hosted by College of Charleston at Kiawah Island Golf Resort's Turtle Point Course in Kiawah Island, S.C.
