The Penguins are coming off a dominant, record-breaking team victory at the 11th annual Roseann Schwartz Invitational at Mill Creek Golf Course on Monday. YSU set new school records for lowest 36-hole performance and lowest team round in relation to par while winning their third straight fall tournament. After taking a commanding 21-shot advantage with a team score of 290 in the opening round on Sunday, the Guins pulled away with a school-record 284 (-4) on Monday to win the event by 36 strokes over runner-up Purdue Fort Wayne.
Senior Maddi Shoults earned medalist honors with a two-round score of 141 (69-72), which is tied for the fourth-lowest individual 36-hole score in program history. The senior secured a one-shot lead following a season-low, three-under-par 69 in the first round on Sunday. The Circleville, Ohio, native carded an even-par 72 on Monday to become the third different Penguin to claim an individual tournament title this fall. Following her individual victory at the Total Athlete Collegiate on Sept. 9, sophomore Sofia Perez Escarcena finished one shot back as the individual runner-up with a two-round total of 142 (70-72).
The tournament field at the Fighting Irish Classic will feature eight other schools including Central Michigan, Dayton, Evansville, IU Indy, Notre Dame, Oakland, Purdue Fort Wayne and Valparaiso.
The teams are scheduled to play 36 continuous holes on Sunday in the one-day event. The opening round of action is scheduled to begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. The course will play approximately 6,166 yards and par is 72.
