Weigel's First Career Goal Leads Women's Soccer Over Northern Kentucky, 1-0

Freshman Gianna Weigel scored the first goal of her career to lead the Youngstown State women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Horizon League co-leader Northern Kentucky on Sunday afternoon at Farmers National Bank Field.
The Penguins improve to 2-8-4 overall and 2-2-3 in league while the Norse fell to 8-4-2 overall and 6-1-0 in the league. It was NKU's first regular-season conference loss since Oct. 19, 2019 - a span of 17 matches.
YSU now has nine points in the league standings, the most by the program since 2014. It was the Guins' first win in nine all-time matches with NKU.
In the 21st minute Justine Appolonia launched a long pass into the Norse penalty area right to Weigel's feet. The Chambersburg, Pa., native chipped a shot into top of the center of the net.
The Penguins outshot the Norse, 7-4, in the first half, but the Norse held an 11-9 in shots for the game. Junior Regan LaVigna led the Guins with four shots while Weigel had two.
Sophomore Brooklynn Kirkpatrick posted her second shutout in the last three games and tallied one save.
Youngstown State visits Purdue Fort Wayne, Thursday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. The Penguins and Mastadons are tied for fifth in the Horizon League standings with nine points each.
