Covington's Buzzer Beater Lifts Penguins to 74-72 Win at Wright State

Dayton, Ohio -- Senior Garrett Covington made a layup as time expired to lift the Youngstown State men's basketball team to a 74-72 win over Wright State on Friday night at the Nutter Center.

With the win, the Penguins improve to 7-4 overall and 3-4 in the Horizon League while the Raiders fall to 7-3 overall and 5-2 in the league.

Leading the Penguins was senior Naz Bohannon with 28 points and eight rebounds while Covington and Michael Akuchie each had 12 points.

Down 72-69, Wright State's Tim Finke hit a game-tying 3-pointer to knot the game at 72-72 with 13.4 seconds left. Bohannon pulled up for a jumper at the left elbow but found Covington under the basket for the game-winning basket as the clock expired.

The Penguins led by as many as 13 points, 48-35, with 16:50 left in the game. Wright State used a 21-7 run over the next seven minutes to take a 56-55 lead at the 9:42 mark.

The Raiders held a 63-58 advantage, but Bohannon, who went 11-for-19 from the field, scored the next 10 YSU points to give the Penguins a 68-65 advantage with 3:09 left.

After Wright State's Loudon Love gave the Raiders a 69-68 lead, Shemar Rathan-Mayes hit a jumper a with 1:52 to go and Bohannon's layup at 1:04 gave the Penguins a three-point edge, 72-69.

For the game, YSU shot 48.4 percent making 30-of-62 attempts while WSU made 29-of-64 shots (45.3 percent).

The contest was back-and-forth in the first half before the Guins scored 14 straight points late in the period. A 3-pointer by the Raiders at the buzzer cut YSU's advantage to 39-31 at the intermission.

The game featured 14 lead changes and five ties. YSU had 10 more free-throw attempts than the Raiders. The Guins outrebounded Wright State, 38-35. Akuchie led the way grabbing nine caroms.

The Penguins and Raiders close out the two-game series on Saturday, Jan. 9. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
