The Youngstown State men's basketball team (6-4) had six players score in double figures and shot 52.6 percent from the field in a 109-56 victory over Carlow on Monday evening at Beeghly Center.
William Dunn scored a game-high 21 points in a game where the Penguins' normal reserves played almost exclusively. Starters Naz Bohannon, Garrett Covington, Darius Quisenberry and Shemar Rathan-Mayes did not play, and Michael Akuchie scored 16 points in under 14 minutes in the first half.
Joining Dunn and Akuchie in double figures were Alex Vargo with 14 points, Christian Bentley with 12, and Myles Hunter and Kenny Ganley Jr. with 11.
Swade Redman led the Celtics, who were playing their season opener, with 13 points.
Youngstown State shot 59.5 percent in the second half, and it made five 3-pointers in each half. The Penguins had scoring edges of 24-1 off turnover and 30-3 in transition.
Carlow's only lead of the game was at 8-7 when Marcus Millien hit a 3-pointer at the 16:24 mark. Akuchie's putback on YSU's next trip down the floor ignited a 9-0 run by the Penguins, who went on to lead by double digits for the final 32 minutes.
The Penguins' first double-digit lead came at 23-12 on a Dunn jumper with 12:06 remaining, and the advantage surged to 31-12 as Bentley's free throws with 9:57 left capped a 15-0 run. YSU's largest lead of the opening half was 26 points, 52-26, when Akuchie scored on a driving layup up with 2:30 left, and it matched that advantage at the break at 54-28.
Akuchie had 16 first-half points, and Dunn and Vargo had 11 apiece at the break.
The Penguin lead reached 68-30 during a 12-0 run that featured two 3s by Hunter and triples by Dunn and Vargo. Carson Ryan later put the Penguins ahead 81-39 at the 12:36 mark with his first career 3-pointer, and the margin was at least 40 for the final 10:19. The final score was the largest difference in the contest.
Youngstown State will begin a two-game series at Horizon League preseason favorite Wright State this weekend. Game one will be broadcast live on ESPN2 and 570 WKBN beginning at 7 p.m. from the Nutter Center.
