PJ Pipes scored 12 points in the final 3:33 to help Green Bay beat the Youngstown State men's basketball team 79-69 on Saturday afternoon at Beeghly Center.
In a game that featured 14 ties and 17 lead changes and had a largest margin of five through the first 38 minutes, Pipes made two 3-pointers and six free throws down the stretch to give the Phoenix their first victory.
Youngstown State is now 5-4 overall and 2-4 in Horizon League play, and Green Bay is 1-9 for the year and 1-5 against the conference.
Naz Bohannon scored 23 points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds to follow up his 32-point, 12-rebound effort on Friday. Darius Quisenberry added 14 points and a game-best seven assists.
Pipes finished 7-of-11 from the field, including 6-of-7 from 3-point range, and 10-for-10 from the free-throw line to score 30 points. After Michael Akuchie hit two free throws out of a media timeout to give YSU a 65-63 lead, Pipes answered with a 3 to start a 16-4 run to close out the game.
The largest lead for either team until the final 90 seconds was five when Green Bay held a 20-15 advantage at the 9:43 mark of the first half. A 3-pointer by Shemar Rathan-Mayes and a basket by Bohannon tied the game at 20, and Bohannon's 10th point of the opening half gave the Penguins a 33-32 lead at the break.
Akuchie's 3-pointer at the 17:10 mark of the second half capped a six-point burst that gave the Penguins a 39-36 lead. Green Bay led by four at 50-46, 53-49 and 55-51 before Bohannon scored eight points in a span of just over four minutes to give Youngstown State a 61-58 advantage with 6:18 remaining. The Penguins went without a field goal for the next six minutes as Pipes got hot.
Youngstown State shot 50.9 percent overall, and it was 22-for-35 inside the 3-point arc. The Penguins were 5-for-18 from long distance, and they were 10-for-19 at the free-throw line. Green Bay shot better from beyond the 3-point arc than it did from two-point range, making 52.9 percent of its 3s and 46.2 percent overall. Green Bay also held a 12-point advantage at the free-throw line.
